Dariusz Banasezk, director of a Polish cycling team, will not be able to perform these duties for months and will have to take a driving course before returning to his duties.

The International Cycling Union (UCI)) has announced this Wednesday the sanction against Banasezk, sports director of the UCI HRE Mazowsze Serce Polski. Banasezk, director of a Polish cycling team, will not be able to perform these duties for months and will have to take a driving course before returning to his duties.

The International Cycling Union has announced this Wednesday the sanction against Banasezk, sports director of the UCI HRE Mazowsze Serce Polski (Mazowsze serce Polski). The penalty responds to a disciplinary procedure which has as its origin an incident related not to riding a bicycle, but to the part of their work that is done by accompanying cyclists by car.

Specifically, Banszek will be suspended from any cycling-related activity until 23 October 2024 and will not be able to drive an accompanying vehicle until 17 March 2025.

In addition, after that date, you must take a driving course, as a condition to be able to participate again in the accompanying vehicles. During the trial, the Disciplinary Commission had already issued a provisional measure banning him from driving a vehicle in a racing convoy from March 2024.

The sporting director of the Mazowze serce Polski committed violations of articles 2.2.038 (drivers' obligations) and 12.4.007 (endanger spectators) of the regulations of the UCI. He did it while driving a car as sports director of his team during the 2023 Tour of Denmark.

It was in the fifth stage, an individual test in which, in his role as an escort from the car, he encountered a dangerous driving: after following one of the team's drivers during the individual test, he returned to the start to follow another driver.

As the driver had already left, he drove recklessly, overtaking several drivers, team cars and motorcycles, to reach him, using even the other track and putting riders, vehicles and spectators at risk.

The UCI reiterates that “the safety of the runners and of all persons present in the racing convoy and along the road is a priority” and that “it cannot tolerate behaviour that may jeopardize safety in the competitions listed in its Calendar”.
