Former world golfing number one Jon Rahm has spoken of his delight to be returning to the Olympic golf event at a venue he holds particularly dear calling it "a dream come true".

The Spaniard made his debut for Europe at the 42nd Ryder Cup in 2018 at Le Golf National, the same venue where all men’s and women’s Olympic golf competitions will be held during the Paris Olympics.

At 23 years of age, the rookie secured his first point in a singles win over Tiger Woods in 2018 and while he looks back on it as one of the best moments of his career, Rahm sees an Olympic medal for Spain as a whole other level of accomplishment.

The now 29-year-old Rahm is one of the 60-man field attempting just the third Olympic golf title since the sport was readded to the Olympic programme in 2016 for the Rio Olympics.

"It's basically a dream come true," said Rahm. "It's a dream that became a possibility only eight years ago for most of us, so it's quite special.

"I think for all of us competing, it's arguably one of the most impressive feats in sports, to own a gold medal and earn a gold medal is something that very few people in history can do. To be able to add to your country's medal count is something special."

Rahm, who was the first Spanish golfer to win the U.S. Open, will represent Spain alongside 22-year-old David Puig. Puig is somewhat of a surprise entry having secured his Olympic spot at the US Open last month with a clutch 2-under 68.

The performance was the latest achievement in an unforgettable year for Puig having won twice in four months at the International Series Singapore and Malaysian Open climbing almost 900 places in the world rankings.

"I've been very fortunate as well to succeed representing Spain and carrying the Spanish flag, so if me and David can end up with a medal, that would be absolutely incredible” continued Rahm.

"It's something that very few athletes in the history of Spain can really say they've been able to accomplish. It would be something very special to be able to do it."
