Another great tennis star will end her professional career at these Olympic Games. Germany's Angelique Kerber, 36, announced her retirement in a message on Instagram and later confirmed it at the tournament draw.

"This might actually be the right decision, it will never feel that way." Kerber will bid farewell to professional tennis in Paris 2024. In a letter posted on Instagram, she said that "I love the sport with all my heart and I'm thankful for the memories and opportunities it has given me."

Andy Murray warned before arriving in Paris that this would be his last tournament as a professional. Kerber announced it today. First with that post on her social media and then at the draw for the pairings at the Paris tennis tournament.

The tennis player explains the emotions she has felt in her career, pointing out the most special moments. Her victories in Grand Slam tournaments, which have been three, Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon, being world number one and the dream come true of the silver medal won in Rio 2016.

In 2022 and 2023 she had to interrupt her career to become a mother. What awaits her after Paris is to devote herself to her family. But now she is focused on enjoying her third and final Olympic experience.

The tennis tournament begins on Saturday. Kerber will play in the first round against Japan's Naomi Osaka, who has won four Grand Slam tournaments and is 10 years younger than her opponent. A tough test on the only major court on which she has not been champion.

Kerber has saved all the thanks she owes for the moment when she finishes her participation. It is the way she has chosen to say goodbye to the world of tennis and start a new life away from the courts.
