He has the name of a prophet and for him faith is very important, perhaps because it is an exercise in constancy to maintain the routine of going to the weekly office, participating actively in his community and even being a religious singer.

This constancy is fundamental for a sport of effort, training and nuances such as athletics, the modality in which the British athlete Jeremiah Azu has been standing out and which has taken him to Paris 2024, his first Olympic Games.

Accustomed to peppering his interviews with biblical quotes and his social networks with images of training sessions and smiles at his increasingly frequent victories, Jeremiah was born in Rotterdam to Ghanaian parents in 2001. His club is Cardiff, the city he moved to when he was three years old.

They call him the fastest man in Wales, but broadening the focus he is also one of the Olympic gods who has broken under the ten-second barrier for the 100 metres. It was last May and opened the door to Paris for him.

Azu secured a decisive victory, outpacing Germans Owen Ansah (10.11) and Robin Ganter (10.13). However, the second-fastest time across both finals was recorded by Yannick Wolf, who achieved a lifetime best of 10.08 to win the B final.

Additionally, he became the 12th British man to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m event. Zharnel Hughes holds the British record, having clocked 9.83 seconds in 2023, surpassing Linford Christie's previous record of 9.87 seconds, established in 1993

The Athletics programme in Olympics starts on 1st August with the two 20k Race Walks and runs through until the final event, the Women's Marathon, on 11th August. The Paralympics schedule runs from 28th August-8th September.

His calendar has two important dates: on Saturday 3 August, in the morning session, the 100m, and on Thursday 8 August, also in the morning, the 4x100m.

Since last summer, Azu has held the Welsh record, achieving a time of 10.08 to surpass Christian Malcolm's previous best mark of 10.11. Later, Azu improved upon this with a time of 10.04. In 2022, Azu clocked a wind-assisted time of 9.90 to claim victory at the UK Athletics Championship.

Sprinting ultimately won the battle for his affections and Azu has collected golds at both U23 and senior European Championships, as well as bronze at the 2023 European Games.

Azu sealed an Olympic debut by finishing second in the men’s 100m at the UK Athletics Championships, having already achieved the qualifying standard time.
