World Rugby needs to recalibrate its international calendar to allow more players like Antoine Dupont to switch between sevens and 15s, according to CEO Alan Gilpin. Dupont starred in France's first gold medal win at the Paris Games by defeating Fiji in the final.

Gilpin praised the success of the men’s tournament, which exceeded expectations with eight sold-out sessions and 550,000 tickets sold. He emphasised that the event showcased rugby sevens on a grand stage, benefiting both the sport and the Olympics.

The upcoming women's tournament is expected to make history as the best-attended women's rugby event, with 69,000 spectators anticipated.

The decision to host the sevens at the Stade de France has been praised, and discussions are underway with organisers for the 2028 and 2032 Olympics about stadium capacities.

Gilpin acknowledged the challenge of the "incredibly congested" men's calendar, suggesting the need to "de-conflict some parts of the calendar" to allow players like Dupont to participate in both sevens and 15s. He mentioned that successful player crossover in the women's game should be a model for the men's game.

France's handling of Dupont’s participation in both formats was highlighted as a potential model for other unions. Gilpin stressed the importance of creating opportunities for players to balance their commitments to both sevens and 15s, especially in preparation for events like the Olympics.

Future efforts will involve negotiating with federations to make sevens a more significant part of international rugby, with potential growth in markets like China and Brazil. Full Paris rugby sevens schedule can be viewed here.
