Taking to his 'X' account, the American said it was "stupid" to call up players who "can't play singles at the highest level". Djokovic also expressed his frustration with the rules on Sunday.

Writing on his 'X' account, former world number one Andy Roddick recently criticised the Olympic entry rules for tennis players: "The Olympic singles replacement situation is ridiculous. It's stupid that players who can't even play singles at the highest level get the call."

Also speaking at a press conference was former world number one Novak Djokovic, who will face Spanish champion Rafa Nadal on Monday - the two players with the most Grand Slam victories.

The Serb criticised the Olympic tournament rules during Saturday's press conference. "There were a lot of singles players who had plenty of time, who were substitutes, who could have been called to come," Djokovic explained.

The Olympic Tennis Tournament (27 July - 4 August) consists of five events (men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles). 15 medals will be awarded.

The qualifying rules are as follows:

There will be 64 men and 64 women in the singles draw. The order will be:

56 by direct entry on the basis of the ATP and WTA rankings as of 10 June 2024 (including the protected rankings for players who have been out of action for more than six months).

1 as a member of the host country (the highest-ranked player from the host country, according to the singles ranking, will qualify directly).

6 places allocated by the ITF:

Continental qualification: Athletes will qualify for an ITF place as long as they are ranked in the top 400 in the singles rankings and their country's quota has not already been filled through direct acceptance.

Olympic Gold Medalist / Grand Slam Champion (two places): An athlete who has not achieved Direct Acceptance but has previously won an Olympic Gold Medal in singles or a Grand Slam singles title will qualify provided they are ranked in the top 400 and their country's quota has not already been filled through Direct Acceptance and Continental Qualification.

If more than two athletes meet these criteria, the two athletes with the highest number of titles will be allocated places. If three or more athletes meet these criteria and have the same number of titles, the two athletes with the highest individual rankings will qualify.

1 universal place (invitation for a country without an elite representative).

The doubles and mixed doubles draws will consist of 32 players each: 31 by direct entry and one by allocation by the host nation. The mixed doubles draw will consist of 16 pairs: 15 by direct entry and one reassigned by the hosting nation.
