Spanish boxer Ayoub Ghadfa caused a major upset by defeating Tokyo bronze medallist Kamshybek Konkabayev. Nobody expected the Spaniard to beat the Kazakh, who had won five professional titles. However, Ghadfa came from behind to win 3-2. Undefeated Bakhodir Jalolov, the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist, made light work of Omar Sihiha with a 5-0 win. Monday also saw the end of Jajaira Gonzalez's Olympic dream.

The third day of the Olympic boxing tournament was full of surprises. The young and inexperienced Spanish boxer Ayoub Ghadfa ended the hopes of Kazakh boxer Konkabayev in the 92kg category. Konkabayev had to settle for Olympic bronze four years ago after losing to the undefeated Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan

As one of Ghadfa's coaches noted, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are two world boxing powers and the Olympics is the perfect stage to prove it. Ghadfa pulled off the upset with a split decision from the judges, eliminating medal favourite Konkabayev. The Spaniard now moves into the quarter-finals.

Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Bakhodir Jalolovcruised to a 5-0 win over Norway's Omar Sihiha. Sihiha was unable to withstand the powerful punches of the Uzbek, who was hoping to repeat his gold medal success of four years ago. Jalolov dominated the centre of the ring and was as unrelenting as ever.

American boxer Jajaira Gonzalez's Olympic dream also came to an end. After an easy win in the first round on Sunday, she was beaten by Beatriz Iasmin on Monday. The Brazilian boxer was very tactical in her 5-0 win, landing punches with dexterity and avoiding Gonzalez's jabs. Gonzalez was unable to close the distance with her opponent.

Another notable match saw Italy's Alessia Messiano lose 5-0 to Ireland's Kelly Harrington. Harrington gave a technical masterclass. She has positioned herself as a medal contender in the 60kg category.

The eliminations will continue on Tuesday with another day of Olympic boxing set to finish on 10th August, the day before the Olympic Games end.
