The British women’s rugby sevens player currently at the centre of a racism investigation has dropped out of Team GB's final game on 'medical grounds'.

Amy Wilson-Hardy has reportedly withdrawn from the Team GB British women’s rugby sevens squad and will not play on the last day of the Olympic tournament in Paris.

The news comes as the 32-year-old English rugby union player, who also represented Great Britain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, finds herself embroiled in accusations of racism over a message she sent on an unnamed messaging app.

While Team GB clarified that Wilson-Hardy isn’t under suspension, they confirmed that she was injured in Britain’s 19-15 surprising loss to China on Tuesday meaning that she would be replaced for the final game.

Media in Britain recently brought a screenshot allegedly sent by Wilson-Hardy to light in which she uses racist language. The incident has prompted an investigation from the British Olympic Association.

Team GB women’s rugby sevens are no longer in contention to receive a medal having lost 17-7  to the United States on Monday night and will not be one of the four nations to reach women's quarter-finals.

Britain Captain Emma Uren said the team is now trying to focus on rugby and has distanced itself from phones and media.

“We heard about this morning, but for us, it is focusing on the games, focusing on getting ourselves in the right place to be able to perform,” she said. “Because we’re off our phones, we don’t know much about it and we didn’t get told much about it because we know that we need to focus on the tournament.”
