The former Rio 2016 Olympic champion defeated Puerto Rico's Juanma López 5-0. He is now firmly in the medal hunt. With Rafa Lozano, Spain is one step closer to the Olympic medal that has eluded them for 24 years, since his father won it.

Tuesday 30 July was also the day of the heart-warming story of Rafa Lozano Junior, who defeated fifth-seeded Australian Yusuf Chothia. At Paris 2024, the Spanish boxer is on the verge of repeating what his father and coach achieved. Rafa Lozano Jr, 19, has now reached the quarter-finals (3 August) and is closing in on the achievements of his 54-year-old father, who won bronze in Atlanta 1996 and silver in Sydney 2000.

Spain has not won a boxing medal since Lozano (senior) won his 24 years ago. It was Spain's last Olympic medal in the sport. His son is now one victory away from a medal at Paris 2024 after defeating fifth-seeded Australian Yusuf Chothia.

Cuba's Arlen López Cardona, 29, is the Olympic champion at Tokyo 2020 in the 75kg category and the amateur world champion in the same weight class. He also won gold at the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Another Olympic champion also competing at Paris 2024 on Tuesday was Dusmatov. The Uzbek fighter won gold in the light flyweight division at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and has had a brilliant amateur career, winning two medals at the 2017 and 2023 World Boxing Championships

Dusmatov came into the Olympic tournament in good form after a successful 2024. He defeated Spain's Samuel Carmona for the IBA professional flyweight championship at the IBA Champions' Night in April. Dusmatov, affectionately known as 'The Professor', showed no mercy as he defeated Puerto Rico's Juanma López 5-0. Dusmatov missed out on Tokyo 2020 but is keen to recapture the Olympic glory he achieved at Rio 2016.

His compatriot, fellow Uzbek Turabek Khabibullaev, was also successful. He defeated Filipino boxer Eumir Felix Marcial 5-0, proving once again that Uzbekistan is a formidable force.
