The surfing events scheduled for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have been postponed due to unfavourable wind conditions affecting wave formation. The women's round of 16 and the men's quarter finals will have to wait.

The Olympic surfing events in Tahiti have been further delayed by the same adverse winds and may not resume until Thursday, organisers said on Tuesday.

The events were suspended on Monday, but could not resume as expected due to winds unsuitable for the sport.

In Teahupo'o, organisers are checking conditions every morning, but on Tuesday they were expecting a delay of at least two days, with events possibly resuming on Thursday. "From Thursday, the wind will shift back to the south-east, so the most likely time to resume is on Thursday," said Pascal Luciani, a member of the Paris 2024 organising committee.

The women's competition has reached the round of 16, with surfers competing in various heats to secure an Olympic diploma (a recognition given to those who finish without a medal, between 4th and 8th place). Heat 17 features Caroline Marks (USA) and Yang Siqi (CHN), Heat 18 features Tyler Wright (AUS) and Anat Lelior (ISR), Heat 19 features Vahine Fierro (FRA) and Johanne Defay (FRA), Heat 20 features Carissa Moore (USA) and Sarah Baum (RSA), Heat 21 features Nadia Erostarbe (ESP) and Matsuda Shino (JPN), Heat 22 features Caitlin Simmers (USA) and Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), Heat 23 features Luana Silva (BRA) and Taina Hinckel (BRA) and Heat 24 features Brisa Hennessy (CRC) and Yolanda Hopkins (POR).

As for the men, the competition is more advanced and is preparing for the quarter-finals with surfers competing in different heats, such as heat 25, the only heat without athletes from the same country, with Alonso Correa (PER) and Inaba Reo (JPN). Heat 26 will feature French surfers Kauli Vaast and Joan Duru, Heat 27 will feature Brazilians Gabriel Medina and Joao Chianca and Heat 28 will feature Australians Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing.

Since the heats began on Saturday, Teahupo'o has provided the world's best surfers with magnificent barrels, resulting in some spectacular images, such as that of Brazilian triple world champion (2014, 2018 and 2021) Gabriel "The Wizard" Medina, who scored 9.90 and captured a photo that went viral and is likely to become an iconic image of the Games and surfing for years to come.

While this is normal in surfing, the Paris 2024 surfing events were scheduled to take place over four days within a 10-day window from 27 July to 8 August. However, time is running out and the final deadline is Monday 5 August.
