Britain's Alex Yee wins Olympic gold in men's triathlon after postponement

Britain's Alex Yee was crowned Olympic champion in the men's triathlon on Wednesday after the event was postponed on Tuesday due to pollution in the Seine.

Analysis of the water quality confirmed that it was safe for swimming on Wednesday, allowing the two individual events to take place. The women's race was held before the men's, with Frenchwoman Cassandre Beaugrand emerging victorious. Beaugrand secured her second Olympic medal (she won bronze in the mixed relay at Tokyo 2020) and her first individual gold.

Yee, 26, took the silver medal he missed out on in Tokyo 2020 and bettered his performance from three years ago. The race combined 1.5km of swimming in the Seine, 40km of cycling and 10km of running, finishing at the Pont Alexandre III. Yee won gold in a close contest with fellow favourite Hayden Wilde of New Zealand, with bronze going to Frenchman Leo Bergère.

Heavy rainfall on the Friday and Saturday of the previous week had contaminated the river and increased bacteria levels due to untreated waste being dumped into the Seine. This led to unsafe levels of contamination for the triathletes' training sessions scheduled for Sunday and Monday, as well as the men's race on Tuesday, which was postponed by one day from the original schedule.

The Seine will also host the open water swimming and mixed relay events on Monday 5 August at 08:00 CEST.

It looked as if Wilde (NZL) would hold on to his lead and secure victory, but Yee, who was 15 seconds behind with a few hundred metres to go, accelerated and positioned himself alongside his friend and competitor before overtaking him to take gold by six seconds.

With this gold medal, Yee became the first athlete in Olympic history to win both the individual triathlon and the mixed relay. At Tokyo 2020, he won silver in the individual event and gold in the mixed relay.

Yee continues a strong British tradition in the Olympic men's triathlon, following Alistair Brownlee's victories at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Although Wilde missed out on gold in the end, his performance was impressive as he improved on his Tokyo 2020 bronze. He was overtaken by a great athlete who had more energy in the final stretch.

Leo Bergère, who finished third, gave France its first ever Olympic medal in the men's triathlon, beating compatriots Dorian Coninx and Pierre Le Corre (who finished fourth). Expectations are high that Coninx and Le Corre will be able to repeat the impressive hat-trick they achieved at the European Championships in Munich in 2022.
