Jamaican track and field star and double 200m world champion Shericka Jackson has announced that she will not compete in the women's 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The decision is based on her desire to concentrate solely on the double hectometre.

The 30-year-old Jackson has won silver medals in the 100m at the last two world championships and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She said she and her coach came to the conclusion that it was best for her performance. “Choosing to run the 200m alone is the right decision,” Jackson said.

The announcement comes after Jackson suffered an injury during a competition in Hungary three weeks ago. On that occasion, the runner, who was at the front of the race, slowed unexpectedly and crossed the finish line with difficulty, visibly affected. “My decision is the result of several considerations,” Jackson said. “The incident in Hungary influenced my choice. I think it's wiser to focus on one event.”

The first round of the women's 100m will take place on Friday at the Stade de France, with the semi-finals and final scheduled for Saturday. As for the 200m, the opening round will be contested on Sunday, with the semi-finals on Monday and the final on Tuesday. Jackson's compatriot Elaine Thompson-Herah, who won these distances in Tokyo, is not competing in Paris due to injury, so Jamaica's chances are severely reduced.
