Azerbaijan claimed their second gold medal and Italy won their first title in the judo competition as the Europeans continued their dominance in the heavyweight categories.

The day before, seven Europeans were on the podium, and on 1 August at the Champ-de-Mars Arena, six more Europeans made it to the podium in the men's -100 kg and women's -78 kg categories.

Azerbaijan'a Zelym Kotsoiev reached the top of the Olympic rankings by winning the gold medal at the 2024 World Championships. He was one of the main contenders for gold in the men's -100kg in Paris along with returning Olympic champion Aaron Wolf (Japan), 2022 World champion Muzaffarbek Turoboyev (Uzbekistan), two-time World champion Nikoloz Sherazadishvili (Spain) and 2021 World bronze medallist Ilia Sulamanidze (Georgia).

Kotsoiev looked comfortable in the elimination rounds, defeating 2020 European champion Peter Paltchik in the quarter-finals and Turoboyev in the semi-finals.

On the other side of the bracket, Sulamanidze defeated Wolf in the quarter-finals and then went on to win against Switzerland's Daniel Eich, who had earlier caused a mini-sensation by beating Sherazadishvili in the quarter-finals.

The final between Kotsoiev and Sulamanidze was decided by shidos. At the end of the bout, Sulamanidze had one shido to his opponent's two. But the Georgian made two mistakes in the space of a few seconds and was warned twice more, conceding victory to his opponent.

Kotsoiev became Azerbaijan's second gold medallist in Paris after Hidayet Haydarov (men's -73kg).

After losing in the quarter-finals, Wolf was beaten in the repechages by another ethnic Georgian, Sherazadishvili. The latter, however, lost to Turoboyev for the bronze medal. Paltchik defeated Eich in the other bronze medal match to claim Israel's first medal in Paris.

Another Israeli judoka, Inbar Lanir, won her country's second medal, reaching the final of the women's -78kg category. But world number one and 2024 World Championships runner-up Alice Bellandi of Italy spoiled Lanir's final impressions.

Bellandi defeated Portugal's Patricia Sampaio, who had caused the biggest upset of the day by knocking out Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and home crowd's favourite Madeleine Malonga from France earlier in the day.

Lanir defeated Germany's Anna-Maria Wagner in a clash of the last two world champions. But Bellandi was too strong for the 2023 champion. She scored a waza-ari in the third minute of the bout, and 20 seconds later Lanir received the third shido, and Bellandi was crowned Olympic champion.

Sampaio finished off an amazing day with a victory over Japan's Rika Takayama in the third place bout. Zhenzhao Ma (China) took the second bronze medal, defeating Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Wagner.
