Paris has had its first medal of the day this morning. Swiss shooter Chiara Leone won the women's 50m rifle 3 positions final with a score of 464.4, which not only won her the gold medal, but also set a new Olympic record.

The Chateauroux shooting centre was the scene of this final, hard-fought leg of the competition, in which Leone was superior to her rivals. American Sagen Maddalena took silver with 463 points, while reigning world champion Zhang Qiongyue of China had to settle for the last place on the podium.

The Swiss athlete, who had qualified third in the final battle, surpassed the other shooters by smashing all the Olympic records she had achieved to date. The feat has helped her to put her country at the top of this discipline once again, with Leone taking over the baton from her compatriot Nina Christen, who won the gold metal at Tokyo 2020.

The Swiss athlete has shown a great capacity for improvement, and before reaching the top in Paris she was forced to improve her performance in this event after finishing 31st at the last World Championships. "It's unbelievable. I don't know what happened on the last shot, but somehow I managed to be almost in the middle. It was perfect, and right now I'm very, very happy," said the excited shooter after her victory.

This feat also means the first gold medal for Switzerland at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. "I knew I could win. I wanted a medal. I wanted a piece of the Eiffel Tower in my hands, and winning is just... I can't describe how I feel," she said. I can't describe how I feel," said Leone, beaming with happiness. "We will have a big party tonight. I don't know when or where, but we'll celebrate."

At 26, Leone can boast of having experienced a historic moment as she sets a new challenge in the discipline and reaffirms herself as one of the top competitors in sport shooting. This is on top of a career that includes a gold medal at the 2023 World Shooting Championships, specifically in the 50m Rifle Mixed 50m Rifle event, and three medals at the 2022 and 2024 European Championships.
