The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected Canada's claim for a bronze medal at Beijing 2022 following the disqualification for doping of Kamila Valieva, who was part of the Russian delegation that won gold in the final classification of the team event in figure skating.

The petition by Canadian team skaters Madeline Schizas, Piper Gilles, Paul Poirier, Kirsten Moore-Towers, Michael Marinaro, Eric Radford, Vanessa James and Roman Sadovsky, as well as Canada Skate and the Canadian Olympic Committee, was unsuccessful.

The re-ranking decision was announced by the International Skating Union (ISU) on January 30 2024. Subsequently, CAS, after hearing the complaint, deliberated and concluded on 22 July 2024 that there would be no change.

In the figure skating team competition at the Winter Olympics held in Beijing in 2022, the gold medal was won by Russia, followed by the United States, which won silver, and Japan, which took bronze. However, it later became known that Russian skater Kamila Valieva had tested positive for doping which caused Russia to lose the points the skater achieved in that competition.

As a result, Russia dropped to third place, with the United States being the new gold medalist and Japan the silver medalist. For its part, Canada, which had placed fourth in this category, claimed that the points lost by Russia should be re-assigned, which would mean that Canada would overtake Russia for the bronze medal.  Now CAS decided that the points lost by Russia could not be awarded to Canada, according to ISU rules.

The Canadian team respects the decision but does not agree with it

Skate Canada respects the decision by the CAS regarding the allocation of medals for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games Figure Skating Team Competition. “While we are disappointed that the ruling does not award Canada the bronze medal, we stand by the efforts and performances of our athletes”, they said. Stake Canada also recognises “their dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout this entire process exemplify the spirit of Canadian figure skating”.

Besides, Canada extends their “heartfelt congratulations” to the gold and silver medalists, the United States and Japan. “Their exceptional performances are truly commendable, and we celebrate their achievements alongside the global skating community”, they said.

Finally, Skate Canada ensures that it “will continue to focus on athlete development, clean sport, and promoting the values of excellence, respect, and fairness within the sport of figure skating”.

Last week, CAS rejected Russia's appeal to retain the team figure skating gold medal won at the Beijing 2022 Olympics, dismissing their attempt to salvage the victory.
