The wind finally picked up on the waters off Marseille, and the delayed windsurfing quarterfinals, semifinals and medal races finally got the go-ahead from organisers.

Two-time Olympian Marta Maggetti clinched gold in the women's new windsurfing class iQFOiL. World Champion Sharon Kantor of Israel took the silver medal. Team GB’s Emma Wilson, who had come first in eight of her 14 preliminary races this week, came in third place.

Wilson held a narrow lead at the halfway stage, but Maggetti staged a comeback in the final stages of the high-speed race with a strategic split. The Italian came from behind to win with a 7:38, earning Italy’s first gold in windsurfing since Sydney 2000.

After a race restart, Israel’s Tom Reuveny finished ahead of the world number one, Australia’s Grea Morris, to grab the men’s iQFOiL gold. Dutchman Luuc van Opzeeland, who was in third place for most of the race, took bronze despite his attempts to catch up.

Reuveny grabbed Israel’s first Paris gold with his 6:43 time, edging out Morris in an exciting finish.

The iQFoil class is a new Olympic discipline, after the traditional RS:X class. In wind foiling, a wing construction is placed under the board, which lifts it above the water and allows higher speeds to be achieved.

Sailing resumes tomorrow at 12:05 CEST with the men’s dinghy and mixed multihull.
