Fans packed the stands in the South Paris Arena Sunday to watch the much-anticipated bronze and gold medal matches for the men’s singles table tennis. The stakes were high as each of the day’s contenders was on a personal mission.

It was China’s Fan Zhendong that clinched the men’s singles gold medal, defeating Truls Moregard in a hard-fought match. Fan has finally redeemed himself from his Tokyo 2020 disappointment in which his gold medal match ended with him losing the crown to compatriot Ma Long in the end.

The Swedish sensation started his campaign strong, winning the first game 11-7 over second-seed Fan. But it was downhill for Moregard from there, with Fan levelling the score in the second game with an 11-9 win. The Chinese star went on to claim the third game 11-9 and fourth game 11-8 in a definitive bid for the gold. Fan then sent down a brilliant backhand winner down the line to become the Olympic champion.

Moregard claimed more than just the silver though. He'll also claim the satisfaction of ending Sweden’s 24-year wait for an Olympic table tennis medal.

Félix Lebrun dominated Hugo Calderano —who eliminated his brother Alexis last Wednesday— 4-0 in the bronze medal match. The home crowd chanted the Frenchman’s name, cheering him to a 6-11, 10-12, 7-11, 6-11 victory. The 17-year-old is now the youngest singles Olympic medallist in the sport and his bronze is France's first medal in this event since Jean-Philippe Gatien took silver at Barcelona in 1992.

Table tennis continues Monday at 10:00 CEST with men’s and women’s team.
