Romania's Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, announced on Tuesday his decision to boycott the Olympic closing ceremony, citing what he termed a "flagrant injustice" towards two of the country's gymnasts.

Ciolacu expressed outrage over what he called a "scandalous situation" involving Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Voinea, who both missed out on medals in the women's floor exercise on Monday

Barbosu had initially celebrated a bronze medal, even unfurling a Romanian flag, before an appeal on behalf of American gymnast Jordan Chiles increased Chiles's difficulty score, relegating Barbosu to fourth place and Voinea to fifth.

Carmencita Constantin, president of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, stated that two complaints would be filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Both Romanian gymnasts left the competition in tears. Voinea, 17, who also lodged an unsuccessful appeal, felt she had been unfairly penalised.

During gymnastics competitions, appeals are common, with some being rejected and others leading to score adjustments. Nadia Comaneci, a legendary Romanian gymnast, voiced her concerns on X, arguing that the gymnasts' mental health had not been protected and calling for a review of Voinea's routine, believing she had not stepped outside the floor boundary.

The Romanian gymnastics team, competing at the Olympics for the first time in 12 years, left Paris without a medal, finishing seventh in the team competition. Despite this, Prime Minister Ciolacu pledged that both gymnasts would receive prize money equivalent to winning an Olympic medal, with €60,000 ($65,000) awarded for bronze.

"I have decided not to attend the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics after the scandalous situation in gymnastics, where our athletes were treated in an absolutely dishonourable way," Ciolacu wrote on Facebook.

Romania has also sent a letter of protest to the International Gymnastics Federation. In a further development, Voinea's mother and coach, Camelia, announced on Facebook that Voinea has decided to quit gymnastics.

A letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) outlining the scores has since been sent, with Romanian news outlet Pro Sport also claiming the federation's officials have addressed the Court of Sports Arbitration.

Mihai Covaliu, president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, sent an additional letter of protest to the International Gymnastics Federation. Addressed directly to President Morinari Watanabe, the letter requests a re-analysis of the appeal regarding Sabrina Voinea Maneca's floor exercise.

"With respect to Olympic values, the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee submits this address by which it respectfully requests you to order the re-analysis by the decision-makers of the case of the Romanian athlete Sabrina Maneca Voinea regarding the score given to the execution of the exercise in the floor final, contested on Monday, 5 August 2024."

"We make this request based on the care that the International Olympic Committee and the entire world sports movement gives to the athlete. The way of assessing the score awarded and the refusal to fully present the reasons/evidence for the rejection of the appeal filed within the deadline set by the regulation brings serious damage both to the image of international gymnastics but especially affects the athlete, even endangering his mental health."

"The media coverage of the case of the Romanian sportswoman at the international level, her public declaration to give up practising this sport as a result of today's decision morally obliges the decision-makers to re-analyse, substantiate and communicate the final decision. The balanced and objective policy that FIG promotes gives us confidence in the fair resolution of the case presented," it read.
