Brazilian football star Marta Vieira da Silva has been ruled out of Tuesday's semi-final clash against Spain, as confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This decision comes after an incident involving an attack on the Spanish captain, which led to Marta's suspension.

She was shown a red card following serious foul play having raised her left leg, catching Spain skipper Olga Carmona in the process. Her marching orders came in first-half stoppage time in Bordeaux right infront the referee who did not hesitate to branded the red. The 38-year-old was inconsolable as she walked off the pitch in what is likely turn out to be her final act at an Olympic Games.

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing body of football, sanctioned Marta for her conduct, imposing a two-game suspension. This punishment comes at a critical time during the Olympic Games, where each match is vital for progressing towards the final.

An appeal was lodged against that FIFA resolution, issued on 2 August. It was raised by Marta Vieira da Silva herself, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Brazil Football Confederation.

All demanded that the sanction to be uplifted. In this way, the Brazilian could play the semi-final on Tuesday 6 August at 21:00 CEST, which is also against Spain. Given the appeal has not be lifted, Marta will not feature in the crunch clash.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is tasked with resolving sports disputes related to fair play and anti-doping, among other issues. On Tuesday, CAS held a hearing to address the matter swiftly, as it is mandated to expedite decisions impacting athlete or team participation during competitions. For urgent cases, CAS operates a specialised Ad Hoc Division based in Paris.
