Rana Reider, coach of Italy's Marcell Jacobs and Canada's Andre De Grasse, has been banned from the Olympic Games after being stripped of his accreditation by the Canadian Olympic Committee over allegations of sexual and emotional abuse.

Sprint specialist Rana Reider, coach of Tokyo Olympic 100m champion Marcell Jacobs and Andre De Grasse, who will defend his Olympic 200m title on Thursday, will have to leave Paris after his accreditation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was revoked by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC).

The decision, which takes immediate effect, comes three days after World Athletics questioned Rana Reider's presence at Paris 2024.

The 54-year-old American coach was accused by the U.S. Center for SafeSport (USCSS) of "sexually abusive behaviour" with an 18-year-old athlete in 2021 when he was 44.

The USCSS is an organisation that works to create a sports community where participants can work and learn together without suffering physical, sexual or emotional abuse.

Reider, who admitted to the incidents and defended the theory of consent, was placed on probation for one year in May 2023 and was allowed to continue coaching on the condition that he was in the presence of another adult.

The decision was made on Monday, August 5. "On Sunday, August 4, we received new information regarding the eligibility of the Canadian team to continue Mr. Reider's accreditation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Following discussions with the Canadian Athletics Association, it has been decided that Mr Reider's accreditation will be revoked," the organisation said in a press release.

Reider's lawyer said in May last year that his client had admitted to a "consensual romantic relationship with an adult athlete that involved a power imbalance" but that no other misconduct had been found for which he was being investigated.

"The decision to accredit Reider was based on the understanding that his probationary period ended in May this year, that he had no other suspensions or sanctions and that he otherwise met our eligibility requirements," the COC said in a statement.

The new allegations against Reider have not been proven in court and he has not been charged with any crime. According to his lawyer, Ryan Stevens, "It's a sad day for the Olympics when a governing body puts the fear of bad publicity ahead of the athletes".

"The injured parties in all of this are the athletes who are suddenly forced to compete without their coach of choice, including one of Canada's top sprinters," Stevens said in a statement.

In recent months, three lawsuits have been filed in Florida against Reider and the personal training centre he owns and operates. One of the cases, filed in Broward County, involves JD, a professional athlete based in the United Kingdom.

The alleged victim claims that the pattern of sexual assault and emotional abuse began at the age of 17 and continued for six years, resulting in two suicide attempts and psychiatric hospitalisation.

Reider has been coaching two elite athletes at these Games for less than a year. Jacobs, who won gold in the men's 100 metres at Tokyo 2020, began training with him last September.

Canada's De Grasse is in his second stint with Reider, having stopped training with him in 2022 after winning gold in 2021 at Tokyo 2020 (he had been training with Ireland's John Coghlan) and resuming at the end of last year.

Reider's accreditation pass gave him access to training and competition venues. De Grasse worked with Reider from 2018 to 2022, winning gold in the 200 metres and bronze in the 100 metres at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in June 2021. De Grasse briefly left the American coach to work with Irishman John Coghlan, but returned to work with Reider in Florida, USA, nine months ago.
