Harrington became the first gold medallist of the Paris Olympics when she defeated China's Wenlu 4-1. The Irishwoman dominated the final from the start, far outclassing her rival. In the women's -66kg category, Imane Khelif reached the final after defeating Thailand's Suwannaapheng amid controversy over her gender.

The women's -60kg gold medal bout was one of the best in the Olympic tournament. The 34-year-old Harrington set the pace. She controlled the distance and chose her timing well. The Irishwoman switched guards and defences and allowed her rival, China's Wenlu, to take the lead. Harrington was a masterclass in ring boxing.

She had a brilliant second round and took the fight to her territory. For Wenlu, only a win before the limit would secure her victory as Harrington was better on points. She did not falter. Harrington launched another devastating attack in the third round. She deservedly won the bout and the gold medal, without flashy boxing but with very practical skills.

The Irishwoman's mastery was once again on display as she repeated her Tokyo 2020 success. She became a double gold medallist, something that had not happened in Ireland since 1934. "I can't believe it," Harrington told Eurosport after the fight, thanking her team for their faith in her. She is eagerly awaited in Dublin.

One of the most eagerly awaited bouts was the women's -66kg semi-final between Janjaem Suwannaapheng (Thailand) and Imane Khelif (Algeria). Khelif booked her place in the final with a convincing 5-0 victory. Once again she won with her bold and powerful boxing style. Despite the controversy surrounding her participation in the Olympics following her elimination from the World Championships and questions about her testosterone levels and genetic production, the Algerian has reached the final.

Khelif will meet China's Yang Liu, who beat Chen Nien Chim (TPE) 4-1 in the other semi-final. It was a close match that was decided by small details. Yang Liu overcame an early setback by being bold. She moved in and out of her opponent's range.

Tuesday's matches, apart from the final between Harrington and Wenlu, provided some exciting semi-finals. These will determine who will go through to the final.

Tuesday's boxing tournament was full of exciting images and details. In the men's -145lbs (71kg) division, Omari Jones (USA) and Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev (Uzbekistan) opened the day's action. Uzbekistan were looking to repeat their previous success of sending two boxers to the final, and Muydinkhujaev lived up to his status as a favourite with a 3-2 win.

After a tough fight that left the judges in doubt, Omari Jones took bronze. The split decision for the American, another Olympic boxing powerhouse, came after a fight full of alternatives and chances.

The other semi-final, in the men's -145kg category, also ended in a split decision between Lewis Richardson (Great Britain) and Marco Alonso (Mexico).

In the end, the Mexican's striking convinced the judges and he won 2-3. Lewis Richardson took bronze. The Mexican boxer dominated both the short and the long distance, setting the pace of the fight to his liking and taking the win. Marco Alonso and Muydinkhujaev will fight for gold in the Olympic final.

The other semi-final in this category was between Buse Naz Cakiroglu (Turkey) and Aira Villegas (Philippines). The Filipino lost 5-0. Aira Villegas took the bronze medal. Wu Ju and Buse Naz will meet in the final for the 50kg title.
