The Court of Arbitration for Sport has dismissed David Sánchez López’s appeal to exclude Türkiye from the Olympics on grounds that three of its weightlifters have committed anti-doping rule violations. CAS released its decision on Thursday following a hearing with a sole arbitrator on 5 August.

Spain's David Sánchez López filed the dispute against the Turkish Weightlifting Federation last Saturday in hopes that the exclusion could lead to his participation in the 73kg weight class at the Paris Games. The three weightlifters in question were financially sanctioned following their violation but were not barred from participating in the Paris Olympic Games by neither the Turkish nor the International Weightlifting Federation. López asserted that, under the IWF’s rules, it was obligated to bar the TWF and all its affiliated athletes from competition in Paris.

Both weightlifting federations, as well as the International Olympic Committee, have responded to the Spaniard’s claims saying López “lacks standing to bring this appeal”. CAS agreed, and although López was directly affected by the original decision to fine but not ban the athletes, his case was dismissed.

Türkiye has had a weightlifter provisionally suspended for a doping violation for the third time in three months and is liable to lose some or all of its quota places for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
