Japan beat Germany and China overcame the Republic of Korea in the women's table tennis semifinals this Thursday to set up a final between China and Japan.

Japan beat Germany 3-1 thanks to its 16-year-old-star Miwa Harimoto becoming the second youngest medalist at the Olympic Games. Germany had 18-year-old Annett Kaufmann, who has been crucial in her way to the semifinals.

For its part, China has secured its place in the women's team final after a 3-0 dominant victory over the Republic of Korea backed by players such as Chen Meng and Wang Manyu. If they win the final, it will be the fifth consecutive gold medal at the Olympic Games.

Table tennis powerhouse China have already booked their place in the team table tennis final, after advancing from the men's team semi-final with a 3-0 win over France on Thursday.

China have won every men's team gold medal since the event was introduced at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and are aiming for their fifth consecutive title.

Wang Chuqin and Ma Long beat Simon Gauzy and Alexis Lebrun 3-0 (13-11, 11-5, 11-2) in the doubles match. Fan Zhendong then extended China's lead by beating Felix Lebrun to win 3-1 (11-3, 13-11, 8-11, 16-14). Finally, Wang Chuqin sealed China's place in the final by defeating Alexis Lebrun 3-1 (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-1).

With their victory, China will face Sweden for the gold medal, while France will battle Japan for the bronze medal on Friday.
Last Thursday, Sweden reached the semi-final after beating Japan 3-2 in a historic feat, the first time they have ever made it that far. Now they face the challenge of overcoming the discipline's only ever Olympic champion.
