The athletes competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have elected four new members to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Athletes’ Commission this week after over 6500 Olympians cast their votes.

Four athletes of the 29 potential Olympians who stood for election will join the IOC Athletes’ Commission after the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and begin their eight-year terms through to the end of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

The IOC Athletes’ Commission is an elected body that plays a central role in the Olympic Movement serving as a a link between athletes and the IOC. Composed of a maximum of 23 members, 12 are selected via an election process at each Olympic Summer Games and Winter Games with fellow athletes casting their votes. Up to 11 more can then also be appointed by the IOC President to ensure a balance of region, gender and sports.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, 6,576 athletes cast their vote between 18 July and 6 August representing an almost 62% participation rate which is the highest at an Olympic Games since London 2012.

29 athletes from all five continents representing 15 sports and 29 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) stood for election. 

The winners and their sports were USA's Allyson Felix (Athletics), Germany's Kim Bui (Gymnastics) Australia's Jessica Fox, (Canoe), and New Zealand's Marcus Daniell (Tennis).



Allyson Felix is the most decorated track and field athlete in history with 11 of her Olympic medals gold as well as a record 20 World Championship medals. Felix received a whopping 2880 votes.

Three-time Olympian, Kim Bui has competed at eight World Championships and received the second most votes at 1721. 

Meanwhile, four-time Olympian Jessica Fox recently won two golds at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to add to her collection including a gold in Tokyo 2020, two silver medals at London 2012 and a bronze at Rio 2016. She received 1567 votes.

Marcus Daniell is a two-time Olympian who won bronze at Tokyo 2020 and has competed in 26 Grand Slams between 2015 and 2022 in doubles and mixed doubles. He received 1563 votes to become the fourth new member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission.



The new members will replace Hungary's Daniel Gyurta (Swimming), Germany's Britta Heidemann (Fencing), Russia's Yelena Isinbaeva (Athletics) and the Republic of Korea's Seung-min Ryu (Table Tennis) all of whom were elected by their peers at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The new members will meet with the rest of the IOC AC for the first time in Paris on Friday, 9 August and elect Chair and Vice-Chair positions.
