After failing to win a single gold medal at the Tokyo 2020, Korean Taekwondo athletes won two gold in the first two days of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

After Taejoon Park, Yujin Kim stepped into the arena of Grand Palais and claimed four wins to win the gold medal in the women’s -57 kg category.

Double Olympic champion Jade Jones suffered a shocking loss in the 1/8 final from North Macedonian athlete Milana Reljikj in three rounds. Another contender Kimia Alizadeh from Bulgaria was defeated by Nahid Kyanichandeh from Iran in the 1/8 final. Alizadeh received a chance to battle for bronze after Kyanichandeh reached the final. Former Iranian, Alizadeh managed to win two more bouts and claimed her career’s second Olympic bronze medal.

Kim faced hard resistance from the World number one, China’s Zongshi Luo, but managed to claim the victory in three rounds.

Kim defeated Kyanichandeh in two rounds to win the gold medal. Luo lost to Alizadeh in the third-place fight, while Canada’s Skylar Park defeated Lebanon’s Laetita Aoun and took the second bronze medal.

Uzbekistan’s Ulugbek Rashitov came to Paris to retain his Olympic champion title from Tokyo 2020. He defeated Great Britain’s Bradly Sinden in the final three years ago, but Sinden became the World champion in 2023 and came to Paris only after the gold medal. While Rashitov defeated Javier Perez in the semi-final in two rounds, Sinden lost his semi-final to Jordan’s Zaid Kareem in three rounds.

Rashitov again came on top to become the double Olympic champion. Kareem won Jordan’s first medal in Paris, while Sinden, upset by his defeat, didn’t show up for the bronze medal match. Yushuai Liang from China and Edival Pontes from Brazil became bronze medallists.
