CAS registers Vinesh Phogat’s weigh-In appeal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Ad hoc Division has formally registered an appeal filed by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat in response to a contentious decision made by United World Wrestling (UWW) regarding her participation in the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition at Paris 2024.

The appeal, registered as CAS OG 24/17, challenges the decision by UWW to disqualify Phogat from competing in the gold medal match due to a failed second weigh-in. This decision was issued just before the gold medal match was scheduled to begin at 18:15 CEST on 7 August 2024.

Phogat’s application seeks the annulment of UWW's decision and requests a new weigh-in before the final match. Additionally, she has asked for a declaration of eligibility to participate in the final and is seeking a (shared) silver medal if her appeal is upheld.

Despite the urgency of the matter, Phogat did not initially request interim measures, which means that while the process is expedited, a decision could not be made within the hour due to procedural requirements, including the need to hear UWW’s side.

The case has been assigned to the Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC from Australia, who is serving as the Sole Arbitrator. A hearing with the involved parties is scheduled for today, and a decision is expected before the conclusion of the Olympic Games.

Phogat’s appeal adds to the high-stakes drama of the wrestling competition and highlights the ongoing challenges athletes face in navigating the rules and regulations of international sports. The outcome of this case will be closely watched as it could impact the final medal standings and the broader discourse on fair competition in wrestling.
