The Paris 2024 Olympic Rugby Sevens competition was spectacular from start to finish, with an electric atmosphere and a record crowd at the Stade de France cheering on a team that delivered a quality show to a knowledgeable and discerning French rugby audience.

Antoine Dupont, with his charisma and high level of play, led a team that arrived in Paris 2024 on a high after winning the Men's Grand Final at the HSBC SVNS 2024 in Madrid.

Argentina, on the other hand, were gold medal favourites, dominating the world circuit throughout the season (ranked No. 1 in the world), but not only did they lose to France in Madrid, they left the tournament with a bitter taste in their mouths after being thrashed by the French in the quarter-finals.

France went on to win Olympic Rugby Sevens gold after beating Fiji 28-7 to claim their first team gold medal at the Paris Games. The victory came in front of a sell-out crowd of 69,000 at the iconic Stade de France, as was the case every time France played there, sparking scenes of euphoria among the local fans.

The final was marked by an outstanding performance from Antoine Dupont (two tries), who came on after the break and made an immediate impact against two-time Olympic champions Fiji, who suffered their first ever Olympic defeat in the final.

In the third-place match, South Africa took bronze after defeating Australia 26-19 in a historic and passionate encounter, with the winners having reached the Olympic stage through the play-offs.

In the women's competition, an epic final and a surprise bronze medal were the highlights of Paris 2024 at the Stade de France.

New Zealand triumphed over Canada in the final and the United States stunned Australiato claim a historic bronze for the North American continent.

In a thrilling match, New Zealand prevailed 19-12. The Black Ferns Sevens, led by co-captain Risi Pouri-Lane and Michaela Blyde, played a key role in a competitive and evenly matched match that was decided in the final moments by Stacey Waaka, who extended the lead by seven points from a Sarah Hirini try to secure victory and gold for New Zealand.

The triumph not only underlined the Black Ferns' dominance of women's sevens rugby, but also marked an emotional farewell to legends Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Tyla King.

In the battle for bronze, the United States pulled off an upset victory in a match that was full of drama. The match came down to the final seconds when Australian star Maddison Levi equalled Portia Woodman-Wickliffe's Olympic try record to put her team ahead.

However, fate had other ideas for the Americans. With the clock showing full-time, Alex Sedrick made a memorable run from near her own posts to the Australian try line to secure bronze for the USA in a finish that left the crowd in awe.

That bronze also marked a historic milestone, as Emilie Bydwell became the first coach to lead a women's team to an Olympic medal, highlighting the progress of women's rugby in North America.
