Germany's Darja Varfolomeev made history on Friday by giving her country its first gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics, with the only precedent being a bronze in 1984 for the then Federal Republic of Germany.

With 142.850 and the highest score on all apparatus except the ribbon, she beat the silver medallist by 2.250 points. It went to Bulgaria's Boryana Kaleyn, with an average of 35,000 in all events and the only one of all, along with the German, to surpass the 140,000 barrier. That silver is the first Olympic medal in any individual rhythmic gymnastics metal for her country since 1988.

The bronze medal went to the 2022 world champion, Italy's Sofia Raffaeli . Her bronze is the first medal of any colour for Italy in the Individual All-Around.

Margarita Kolosov (GER), Daria Atamanov (ISR), Ekaterina Vedeneeva (SLO), Wang Zilu (CHN) and Milena Baldassarri (ITA) completed the top eight.

Preliminary round

In addition, 14 groups of five gymnasts competed for the first eight qualifying places in the preliminary round, with mixed results for some.

Two routines were shown: one exercise with five rings and a second with three ribbons plus two balls. Bulgaria, the reigning Olympic champions, scored 37.700 on 5 Hoops and 32.700 on 3 Ribbons + 2 Balls, which translated into the highest score of the day, 70.400 points.

They were closely followed by the Italians with a score of 69.350, which included the highest score of the day for the 5 Hoops (38.200).

Ukraine qualified for the final in third place, scoring 35.450 for their 5 Hoops routine with flashy musical excerpts from Carmen.

France, the home country, won the cheers and applause of the audience, and achieved a fourth position and the chance to enjoy the support of the audience again in the final.

The top eight qualifiers for Saturday's final were the People's Republic of China, Israel, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

The ninth-placed Brazilians qualified fourth after their first routine. One of their members, Victoria Borges, was injured before she left and still competed, as the rules prevent substitutions. In pain, she competed so that her teammates would not be left out and received a standing ovation from the audience.
