Kenya's Faith Kipyegon made history on Saturday after becoming the first woman to win three consecutive Olympic 1,500m gold medals with a superb display of middle-distance running. 

The 30-year-old 2016 and 2020 champion produced a tactical masterpiece at the Stade de France to take gold in a new Olympic record of 3min 51.29sec.

Australia's Jessica Hull took silver in 3:52.56 while Britain's Georgia Bell claimed bronze and national record in 3:52.61.

Record-breaking jumps

The high jump saw an accumulation of records of all kinds: New Zealand's Hamish Kerr, gold, with his 2.36 made an area record; USA's Shelby McEwen, silver, with 2.36 made his personal best; Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim, with 2.34, bronze and the best figure of the season. And off the podium, Italy's Stefano Sotile, fourth, with 2.34, set a personal best, as did Japan's Ryoichi Akamatsu and Ukraine's Oleh Doroshchuk.

Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen wins Olympic men's 5,000m gold

World champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen overcame surging Ethiopian team tactics to win the Olympic men's 5,000m in Paris on Saturday. The Norwegian, who finished fourth in the 1,500m, timed 13min 13.66sec for gold, Kenya's Ronald Kwemoi taking silver in 13:15.04.

American Grant Fisher will return home with two bronzes after rounding out the podium (13:15.13) as he had also done in the 10,000m race.

Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi edges Arop for Olympic 800m gold

Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi held off world champion Marco Arop of Canada to win the Olympic men's 800m gold in Paris on Saturday.

Wanyonyi clocked a personal best of 1min 41.19sec for victory, Arop taking silver at just one-hundredth in a North American record. Pre-race favourite Djamel Sedjati of Algeria claimed bronze with 1:41.50, while Bryce Hoppel was fourth in 1:41.67, an American record. It was the first time ever that four men in the same race broke the 1:42 mark.

USA's Russell wins Olympic women's 100m hurdles gold

Masai Russell of the United States snatched victory in the Olympic women's 100m hurdles on Saturday, edging out France's Cyrena Samba-Mayela.

Russell edged home in 12.33sec to take gold, just a whisker ahead of Samba-Mayela, who clinched the host nation's first athletics medal of the games in 12.34sec. Puerto Rico's Jasmine Camacho-Quinn took bronze in 12.36sec.

In a thrilling final at the Stade de France, it looked as if home hope Samba-Mayela might have snatched a sensational gold medal after crossing the finish line neck-and-neck with Russell. But after a brief delay, victory was awarded to Russell by the finest of margins ahead of the Frenchwoman.

Ethiopia's Tola wins Olympic marathon as China sweeps diving golds

Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola broke the Olympic record to win the men's marathon on Saturday. Tola dominated the marathon from central Paris to Versailles as Eliud Kipchoge's bid for a third straight gold went up in smoke.

The 22-year-old registered a time of 2hr 06min 26sec, 21 seconds clear of Belgium's Bashir Abdi, the bronze medallist from Tokyo, with Kenya's Benson Kipruto taking bronze. "It's the greatest day in my life. This was my goal.", said the world champion in 2022.

Former world record holder Kipchoge, the 39-year-old Kenyan who won gold in the 2016 Rio Games and in Tokyo in 2021, pulled up late in the race receiving a rapturous reception from the crowd.

Relay 4x400

In the men's 4x400 relay, the USA took gold with 2.54.43 and an Olympic record; silver went to Botswana, with 2.54.53 and an area record; and Great Britain got Bronze, also an area record with 2.55.83. 

Rai Benjamin anchored the United States to victory and helped the US quartet also featuring Christopher Bailey, Vernon Norwood and Bryce Deadmon to an Olympic record of 2min 54.43sec.

 In the women's relay, gold also went to the USA, with an area record of 3:15.27, the Netherlands took silver with 3.19.50 and a national record, as did Great Britain, bronze, with 3.19.72.

Japan's Kitaguchi wins Olympic women's javelin gold

Japan's Haruka Kitaguchi won the Olympic women's javelin gold medal on Saturday. The 26-year-old sealed victory with her opening throw at the Stade de France, a season-best effort of 65.80m. South Africa's Jo-Ane van Dyk took silver and Czech Nikola Ogrodnikova took bronze.
