The United States defeated Brazil (1-0) in the Olympic women's football final to win the gold medal for the fifth time in its history. USA's Mallory Swanson scored the game's decisive goal in the 57th minute of the match.

This is the first time the U.S. has won the Olympic gold medal in 12 years but their fifth gold in the history of the footballing category having won in 1996, 2004, 2008, 2012 and now the 2024 Olympic Games. The South Americans had to settle for silver again, as they did in Athens 2004 and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The match was very disputed, having a first half marked by the attacks of the United States, which were not able to materialize in any goal. Thus, the first half ended (0-0) without either team being able to take the lead on the scoreboard.

However, the second half was decisive for the US game, after Swanson Mallory scored in the fifty-seventh minute with an assist from Albert Korbin. In this way, the United States took the lead in the scoreboard and won a very tight final for both teams.

This short difference allows us to find a very curious statistic. Since the quarterfinals, all the matches played by the U.S. players have ended in victory for the U.S. team with a (1-0) in their favour. This illustrates how closely contested and tight this women's soccer tournament has been and how evenly matched all the teams have been.

In this way, Brazil takes a silver medal that very few people expected, after almost falling in the group stage. Moreover, this victory for the United States confirms their renaissance under the leadership of the new England coach Emma Hayes.

"I am very emotional. It has been a dream of mine to be in this position. Tremendous people and players and role models, I love them," Hayes told broadcaster Eurosport after the final of the Olympics.
