On the final day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Hungary clinched the gold medal in the women's modern pentathlon. France secured the silver, while South Korea earned the bronze, rounding out the podium in a thrilling conclusion to the event.

The pentathlon final was held today, where Hungary's Michelle Gulyas took the gold medal, breaking the points record and setting a new world record with 1461 points. Hungary now equals Sweden in number of gold medals in this discipline (both men and women), with both countries having a total of nine medals.

In second place with the silver medal was France, thanks to Elodie Clouvel. The French athlete won the silver medal, only nine points short of equalling the Hungarian, with a final score of 1452 points.

The Frenchwoman declared that "I am really enjoying this medal. The truth is that it has no colour for me, considering what I set out to achieve today and what I did to achieve it, it's unbelievable" she reacted, thrilled with her silver medal around her neck. In third place was South Korean athlete Seungmin Seong. She scored 1441 points, just 20 points shy of first place.

The final was very close. For the local athlete, she spent the entire final in the lead until the first shot of the laser race. Helped by the points she earned before the semi-finals in the fencing qualification round (260), the 35-year-old pentathlete kept up the pace throughout the final. However, she had a minor lapse at obstacle number 8, in equitation, which condemned her to the silver medal.

While the Hungarian took the lead on the first pass through the field, the Frenchwoman and the Korean were neck and neck after the second. With two laps to go, the leading trio were within ten seconds of each other and had closed the gap to the chasing pack. However, a strong finish in the last race saw the Hungarian take the gold medal.

The modern pentathlon made its Olympic debut in Stockholm in 1912, measuring an athlete's overall ability in five disciplines. The new format, which previously took one day, now lasts just 90 minutes, testing different ways of tackling the event at this year's Olympic Games.
