Former Olympic springboard diving champion Tom Daley, Britain's most decorated diver, said on Monday it was the "right time" to retire.

Daley is 30 and has won five Olympic medals in his career, winning silver in the men's 10-metre synchronised platform in Paris after winning gold in the same event at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

"I have to make the decision at some point, and I think it's the right time. It's the right time to quit," Daley told British Vogue magazine in an interview.

His career has been precocious: he first competed in the Olympics at Beijing 2008 at the age of 14 and already excelled there.

He went on to win bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 10-metre platform, as well as bronze in the men's 10-metre synchronised platform at Rio 2016.

He announced his retirement after the gold in Tokyo, but returned to participate in Paris, his fifth Games, in order to compete in front of his two children. Daley and team-mate Noah Williams took silver in the competition, finishing behind China a fortnight ago.

At these games, he was also the flag bearer, becoming the first British diver to do so. He is a diver who makes history for highest number of participations by a British athlete in the sport. He is also known for his campaigning for LGBTQ rights.

"I felt very nervous knowing it was my last Olympic Games (...) There was a lot of pressure and expectation. I couldn't wait for it to be over," he said in the interview. Now he is focusing on his family: his husband and two children, who have been in Paris with him.
