China dominated the table with a combined ten medals — five of which were gold. The Asian nation championed in the 10m air rifle mixed, plus the men’s 10m air rifle, 10m air pistol, 50m rifle 3 positions and 25m rapid-fire pistol.

Sheng Lihao, who claimed the men's 10m air rifle event, was also part of the 10m air rifle mixed team triumph with fellow teen Huang Yuting. The double-gold medallist made his debut in Tokyo 2020, where he became the youngest shooter (16 years, 233 days) to win an Olympic with his silver.

Adriana Ruano Oliva’s name has also gone down in history, winning Guatemala’s first-ever Olympic gold. Adding to her women’s trap title, she rewrote the Olympic record books with a final score of 45 shots.

"I can’t even believe it’s for real. I’m so happy. I’m honoured to be here, and it wasn’t easy to get here again. I want to thank Guatemala, and also my father," she said after taking the gold.

Her compatriot Jean Pierre Brol Cardenas also won a historical first medal in the sport —Guatemala’s second ever. He took bronze in the men’s trap final which saw more than just clay targets smashed. British shooter Nathan Hales took the gold while breaking the Olympic record, scoring 48 out of 50.

"It was always a dream of mine, so to be able to come here and actually see it through to the end is absolutely unreal," Hales said after breaking down in tears at the podium.

However, while top contenders enjoyed their wins that were literally as good as gold, it would be the silver medallists that would rocket to fame.

Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikeç became an overnight social media phenomenon after his mixed team 10m air pistol win. Despite only winning a silver, his cool demeanour —shooting his gun with one hand in his pocket without using equipment such as lenses, eyelids and ear protection— quickly became a golden moment with even athletes from other sports imitating his stance in their Olympic celebrations.

Joining him is South Korean pistol shooter Kim Ye-ji, whose shooting style also won the attention of social media users who praised her confidence and manner, including Tesla’s Elon Musk. Kim, who also won silver in a different event, enamoured fans with her bespoke glasses that look like they’re straight out of a sci-fi film and the contrasting stuffed elephant toy on her waist.

South Korea enjoyed the second-most wins at Chateauroux with three gold medals among their six-medal haul.
