Jordan Chiles will still be denied a bronze medal in artistic gymnastics after the US gymnastics federation's bid to the Court of Arbitration for Sports failed.

The competition was held on Monday 5 August in the floor artistic gymnastics event. Brazil's Rebeca Andrade won gold and US star Simone Biles won silver.

The dispute came for the bronze, which Romanian Ana Barbosu considered hers on points, but which ended up going to American Jordan Chiles after a claim.

The fight for bronze did not end there: from Romania it was alleged that the US claim was not submitted within the time limit established by the rules, but was made four seconds later. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, who decides about these controversies, ruled in their favour and the International Olympic Committee awarded the bronze to Barbosu.

The United States filed a new claim which has been rejected, so the bronze still does not go to Chiles.

What USA Gymnastics raised is that the coach's claim was made 47 seconds after the score was posted, a time frame that is under the one-minute time limit.

USA cited new video evidence showing that the appeal was filed on time, and even that a second appeal was filed 55 seconds later. CAS rules, they explain, do not allow an arbitration award to be reconsidered even if conclusive new evidence is submitted.

"We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue all possible avenues and appeal processes, including the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure fair scoring, placement and medal awards for Jordan," warns USA Gymnastics, outlining what the next step will be to try for bronze for their athlete.
