Noka Djokovic took a legendary gold after defeating Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and before that Spain's Rafa Nadal, while China's Zhen Qinwen won gold in the women's singles at the Paris Games, which saw Britain's Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber retire from the courts.

In the men's final, his first Olympic final, 37-year-old Novak Djokovic won a narrow 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2) victory over Carlos Alcaraz to become the fifth player to complete the Golden Slam of the four majors plus Olympic gold. It was his fifth Olympic Games, but it was his first gold. In the first, Beijing 2008, he won bronze. In London 2012 and Tokyo 2020 he lost the semi-finals and also the match for third place.

Djokovic made his most emotional, familiar, patriotic and religious celebration while the Spaniard Alcaraz cried for having let his country down.

Before the final, Paris 2024 offered tennis fans one last duel between Djokovic and Nadal. It was the 60th meeting between the two. Nadal had already defeated Djokovic in the semi-finals in Beijing 2008 en route to singles gold, and later won men's doubles gold at Rio 2016.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist was defeated by perennial rival Novak Djokovic, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round of the Paris 2024 singles competition.

Rafael Nadal is a 22-time Grand Slam champion, a four-time US Open champion, and has won 14 French Open singles titles. The Spaniard, who won Olympic singles gold in 2008, lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the second round of singles, and along with Carlos Alcaraz fell in the quarter-finals of doubles.

Nadal's last Grand Slam title came at the 2022 French Open. He was last crowned at the US Open in 2019, but will now have missed four of the last five US Opens, with the exception of his run to the fourth round in 2022.

Italy's Lorenzo Musetti claimed a bronze medal. His opponent, Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime, came with the peace of mind of having won bronze in mixed doubles.

Women singles

China's Zheng Qinwen won singles gold, beating Croatia's Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3 in the final. Qinwen was Asian Games champion in 2022. This year she reached the final of the Australian Open, but lost to Belarusian Aryna Sabalina. She is ranked No. 7 in the WTA rankings and won her first major world title at the age of 21.

The bronze was won by world number one Iga Swiatek after defeating Slovakia's Anna Schmiedlova.  The Polish player missed out on the gold medal after losing in the semi-finals to China's Zheng Qinwen. But this was her first appearance at the Games and she left with a medal.

Andy Murray's  and Angelique Kerber retirement

Former world number one and winner of three Grand Slam titles, Britain's Andy Murray , had already announced that these Games would be his retirement. It could not be with gold, as he lost to Dan Evans in the quarter-finals of the men's doubles, his only event.

Murray won gold at the 2012 Olympics on an emotional day at the All England Club, when he defeated Federer.  Four years later he beat Juan Martin del Potro to become the first player, male or female, to win two Olympic singles golds. Murray also led Great Britain to the Davis Cup title in 2015, the country's first in 79 years. He has won 46 titles in total.

German Angelique Kerber, 36, announced her retirement after her three Grand Slam victories at the Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon, her world number one ranking and the dream come true of a silver medal at Rio 2016.

Men's doubles

In men's doubles, the Australian pair of Matthew Ebden and John Peers won gold in a thrilling final against Americans Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. The United States also took the bronze medal. Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul beat Czech Republic's Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek in the medal final.

Women's doubles

The final match at Roland Garros at these Olympic Games was the women's doubles final, with Sara Errani and Yasmina Paolini giving Italy gold in women's doubles.

Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider made history by becoming the first Russian athletes to win a medal at the Paris Olympics, taking silver in the women's tennis doubles event after losing the final to the Italian duo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.

They were competing as neutrals, the category created because of the war in Ukraine: medals do not count for their countries and they win without their anthem or flag flying. Before that, they had to disavow the war.

The bronze medal in women's doubles went to Spain's Cristina Bucsa and Lara Sorribes-Tormo, who were able to overcome the disappointment of losing to Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider.

Mixed doubles

Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac won the gold medal in mixed doubles. The final was decided in the super tie-break against the Chinese Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen. The bronze medal went to the Canadian pair of Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat the Dutch pair of Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof 6-3, 7-6 (3).
