Mbappé scores on Real Madrid debut in UEFA Super Cup

Kylian Mbappé scored on his Real Madrid debut to help his new side win a record sixth UEFA Super Cup with a 2-0 victory over Atalanta in Warsaw on Wednesday.

The French striker scored a stunning goal, his second for his Spanish club, as Los Merengues won the UEFA Super Cup 2-0 against Gian Piero Gasperini's Italian side Atalanta, who were playing in their first Super Cup after stunning Bayer Leverkusen in last season's Europa League final.

By scoring on his Real Madrid debut, the Frenchman helped his new team-mates secure another title for the world's most successful team in the Polish capital on Wednesday.

The French star, who said at his unveiling press conference that he had waited years to play for his dream club, finally signed for Real Madrid this summer afterleaving Paris Saint-Germainand celebrated his first appearance with a goal.

Federico Valverde opened the scoring for the Champions League holders with a 59th-minute strike from close range after the Italian Europa League winners had kept a clean sheet against superior opposition in the first half.

After the first goal, everything opened up for the team from the Spanish capital. In the 68th minute, Mbappé fired the ball into the net after Jude Bellingham had spotted his movement in the box to seal the victory.

"It was a great night, I've been waiting for this moment for a long time," Mbappé told Movistar in surprisingly fluent Spanish.

"To play with this shirt, with this badge, for these fans, it's a gift for me. Winning a trophy is also very important, we know that we always have to win here and I am very happy," explained the striker, who made his professional debut with Monaco in 2015 at the age of 16.

Madrid's triumph ensured that coach Carlo Ancelotti equalled former Los Merengues boss Miguel Muñoz's record of 14 trophies.

Mbappé started in the middle of Madrid's attacking line, flanked by Vinicius Junior on the left and Rodrygo Goes on the right, in a first glimpse of how he might fit into Ancelotti's plans this season.

To accommodate the Frenchman in the attacking trio, Englishman Bellingham played in a slightly deeper midfield role than last season, where he had a devastating impact on goalscoring.

"(Mbappé) has the quality to score a lot of goals. What we need to find is balance in the team and today we didn't have that," Ancelotti told Movistar.

The Italian coach took Mbappé off in the 83rd minute to an ovation from the crowd, and the first applause for a Real Madrid player came quickly, likely the first of many to come.

Mbappé said he expected to improve in the coming weeks, with Madrid's La Liga campaign starting on Sunday against Real Mallorca in the Balearic capital. The first match at the Santiago Bernabéu comes on Sunday 25th, when they host Valladolid in what will be the first official home game for Madrid's new star.
