Many of the athletes competing at the Olympics came from NCAA schools. NCAA

The National Collegiate Athletics Association’s schools sent more than 1,000 former, current and incoming student-athletes who represented more than 100 different countries to the Paris Olympics Games. 272 of them won 330 medals for 26 countries.

Let's take a look at the top five schools that won the most medals.

Standford

The Californian university boasts the most medals combined at a whopping 34. This includes swim superstar Katie Ledecky’s incredible medal haul of two golds, a silver and a bronze. Amazing as that may be, Torri Huske topped Ledecky’s stats with three golds —the most of any Cardinal— and two silvers.

Queen of Swords, Vivian Kong, who clinched Hong Kong’s first gold is also an alumnus, as well as Kassidy Cook of the diving duo Cook and Bacon, who grabbed silver in the women's synchronised 3m springboard.

Stanford University sits ahead of other NCAA schools with its 12 golds, 11 silvers and 11 bronzes.

The Golden Bears also turned out a pack of swimming greats, including Ryan Murphy who came home from Paris with a medal of each colour. Fellow swimmers Jack Alexy and Abbey Weitzeil follow close behind with two —gold and silver— medals each.

California further showed its water domination with podium finishes in rowing and water polo.

The University of California totalled 17 medals from the Paris Olympics; four golds, six silvers and seven bronzes.

University of Texas

Texas Longhorns follow close behind with 16 medals in total. Alumnus Kevin Durant’s basketball gold from Paris made him the first Team USA player to win four Olympic gold medals and the first male athlete to win four gold medals in a team sport.

Ryan Crouser earned a similar distinction, becoming the only three-time Olympic gold medallist in shot put after his Paris win. Long-jump champion Tara Davis-Woodhall truly represented Texas, donning a cowboy hat to celebrate her win.

University of Virginia

They may be called the Cavaliers, but the university has certainly made its mark in the pool. Gretchen Walsh showed she wasn’t horsing around and won four medals at the Paris Olympics, two golds and two silvers. Fellow Cavalier Kate Douglass earned the same haul in swimming.

Virginia took home 14 medals from the Paris Games —of which 11 were from swimming—  seven golds, five silvers and two bronzes.

University of Southern California

Rounding out the top five is USC, who showed off its track and field prowess in Paris, with over half of its medals owed to the sport. Sprinters took home most of the gold, including Andre De Grasse and Rai Benjamin who took home two.

The Trojans also triumphed in the pool, with medals of every colour from water polo, including a gold from Anni Espar who won Spain’s first women’s title in the sport.
