Taipei and New Taipei are continuing their preparations for the World Masters Games 2025, the international multi-sport event that will be held in May next year. The event will consist of 35 sports for athletes aged 30 and above, all of whom will be led by Strong, the mascot symbolising vitality.

The World Masters Games chose Strong through an online contest in which more than 2,000 proposals were registered, a very high response that demonstrates the community's enthusiasm for this prestigious event. Chosen by Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-An and New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-Yi, the mascot Strong, known as "壯寶" in Chinese, was revealed in a ceremony featuring the world’s oldest badminton player, Lin You-Mao. The unveiling showcased a touching moment between the mascot and Mr. Lin, further solidifying the mascot's symbolic importance.

Mayor Chiang highlighted that a mascot is essential for representing major sporting events. Strong was designed to embody the unity between Taipei and New Taipei City, with its concept drawn from the Chinese character "北" (North). The mascot's colours —blue symbolising trust and composure, and pink representing passion and vitality— create a charming and spirited figure that encapsulates the essence of the games.

The name "Strong" cleverly plays on the Chinese pronunciation of "World Masters Games," symbolising resilience and strength. The Chinese nickname "Zhuangbao," combining "Zhuang" (meaning strong) and "Bao" (meaning treasure or baby), reflects the mascot’s status as a cherished symbol of the event.

Mayor Chiang also pointed out the inclusive nature of the World Masters Games, where athletes of all ages and abilities can compete without the need for prior selection. This open format fosters international friendships and offers a unique opportunity for athletes to realise their dreams on a global platform. The event is expected to attract athletes worldwide to Taiwan for 15 days, bringing a significant boost to local tourism.

Echoing these sentiments, New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-Yi noted that the event is projected to draw 40,000 participants, marking it as the largest sports event in Taiwan’s history. He emphasised the mascot’s role in bridging the event with the public, ensuring that the themes and values of the World Masters Games are effectively communicated.

As the cities collaborate closely, the concept of "北" (North) underscores their shared vision of "unlimited sports, life." The World Masters Games 2025 not only promises intense competition but also a rich cultural exchange, inviting sports enthusiasts to explore Taiwan while participating in the games.

This grand sporting event, blending international camaraderie, cultural immersion, and tourism, will feature 35 sports disciplines, including 9 Paralympic categories. Open to participants aged 30 and above, with no upper age limit, the games are designed to foster a spirit of global unity and sporting excellence. Competitors can register individually or as part of multinational teams.

Among the notable participants is Mr. Lin You-Mao, aged 102, who holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest badminton player. With over four decades of experience and a remarkable record in the Taipei Morning Cup Badminton Championship, Mr. Lin has already signed up for the World Masters Games, aiming to add another gold medal to his collection.

The World Masters Games, scheduled from 17 to 30 May 2025, is expected to draw nearly 30,000 athletes from over 110 countries, along with 10,000 accompanying guests. This event is not only poised to promote sports tourism but also to give a significant boost to Taiwan’s economy.
