OCA cancels Bangkok-Chonburi Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games

It's now confirmed. The Olympic Council of Asia has cancelled the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) Bangkok-Chonburi 2021 as the Organising Committee couldn't meet the criteria set out in the Host City Contract by the final deadline of Monday 19 August 2024, 5pm Bangkok time.

The AIMAG Organising Committee submitted a progress report to the 43rd OCA General Assembly in Bangkok in May last year, which promising that all Host City Contract requirements would be met by July 2024.

At an emergency meeting on Thursday 15 August 2024, the OCA Executive Board unanimously agreed to cancel the Games unless the AIMAG Organising Committee met nine conditions by Monday 19 August 2024, 5pm Bangkok time, to ensure that the Games could be held. As these conditions were not met by the deadline, the OCA had no choice but to cancel the Games.

The Olympic Council of Asia expresses its sincere condolences to the athletes who were due to compete at the AIMAG and recognises the significant impact this decision will have on them.

Despite numerous attempts by the Olympic Council of Asia to ensure that the Games could go ahead, it was clear that this would not be possible and the OCA has cancelled the event in the best interests of the athletes and all stakeholders. The OCA will follow up with the respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to ensure that the athletes receive the support they need.

The OCA Executive Board also unanimously agreed that if Thailand wishes to host the AIMAG after the next edition, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2026, they can apply through the normal process. Originally scheduled to take place from 21-30 May 2021, the 6th AIMAG has been postponed four times for various reasons. It was postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, first from 10 to 20 March 2022 and then from 17 to 26 November 2023.

It was postponed again due to the political uncertainty in the country following the Thai general election, then rescheduled from 24 February to 6 March 2024 to be postponed again due to its five-month proximity to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The event has now been officially cancelled.
