The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with TikTok to enhance global engagement with the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and advance the development of Para sports worldwide.

The collaboration, following on from the IPC's partnership with YouTube, is centred around TikTok's LIVE gifting feature, is set to bring the excitement of the Paralympic Games to a broader audience while supporting the growth of Para sports through innovative means. Since the @Paralympics TikTok account launched in late 2020, it has attracted over 4.4 million followers and generated nearly 2 billion video views, establishing itself as a powerful platform for connecting with audiences globally.

The IPC and TikTok have now developed a strategic plan to deliver more unique content than ever before during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, aiming to engage fans and support Para sports on a global scale. Throughout the 12 days of competition, more than 400 video clips capturing the best sporting moments will be shared, showcasing the action in the distinctive style that has made the @Paralympics account so popular.

Leading up to the Closing Ceremony on 8 September, nearly 50 TikTok LIVE videos will feature top Paralympians sharing their experiences in and around Paris, offering fans an intimate and real-time look at the Games. TikTok users will also have the opportunity to connect with the Paralympics in a new way through the platform's LIVE gifting feature.

During this period, exclusive Phryge Gifts will be available on LIVE videos from creators in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. For every Phryge gift sent, TikTok will make a donation to the IPC’s global Para sport development programs, which aim to increase opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in sports and physical activity.

In addition to these real-time interactions, TikTok will provide daily highlights of the best sporting action from Paris 2024, as well as features on each of the 22 Paralympic sports. To help educate and engage viewers, TikTok, in partnership with Allianz, will produce 90-second animated guides explaining the nuances of these sports.

Mike Peters, Chief Executive Officer of the IPC, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasising the positive impact it will have on Para sport development worldwide. “We’re immensely grateful that TikTok through its LIVE platform will help raise funds which the IPC will then invest into Para sport development programmes around the world, helping to create and support the next generation of Paralympic athletes,” he said.

Peters also highlighted the importance of reaching younger audiences, noting that “TikTok has quickly established itself as the IPC’s largest social platform for engaging global audiences and we are really excited to deepen our relationship with them for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Engaging Generation Z and Millennials is a top priority for us, and during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games they are in for a real treat as we’re going to be showcasing a whole host of sporting action and athlete content in the unique and engaging way the @Paralympics TikTok account has become known for.”

Adam Wang, Head of TikTok LIVE, echoed these sentiments, stressing the platform's role in uniting people through shared experiences. "At TikTok, we're passionate about bringing people together through shared experiences, and our work with the International Paralympic Committee is a perfect example of this. With TikTok LIVE, we're offering our global community an unprecedented opportunity to engage with the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games in real-time, all while supporting the growth and development of Para sport worldwide."

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, scheduled from 28 August to 8 September, will feature 4,400 athletes from over 165 countries competing in 549 medal events across 22 sports. This innovative partnership with TikTok positions the IPC to bring the excitement and spirit of the Games to a wider audience while supporting the future of Para sports on a global scale.
