The Argentine basketball team, led by Emanuel Ginobili, which won gold at the Athens 2004 and bronze in Beijing 2008 - the only team to deny the US Dream Team a gold medal since they started playing with NBA players - will return to the court in November, 20 years after their historic achievement.

The Argentine basketball team, one of the most important in the history of South American sport, announced the event in a video shared on social media and broadcast by the media. The video compiled individual responses from ten players from different parts of the world, simulating a WhatsApp group conversation.

The video begins with former coach Rubén Magnano announcing the reunion, followed by positive responses from former players Rubén "El Colo" Wolkowyski, Juan Ignacio "Pepe" Sánchez, Hugo Sconochini - captain in Athens - Gabriel Fernández, Alejandro Montecchia, Leonardo Gutiérrez, Walter Herrmann,Luis Scola, Andrés "Chapu" Nocioni and Fabricio Oberto.

There was also a response from former NBA player Carlos Delfino, who was a young player with limited minutes in Athens and is the only one still active, currently playing for Benedetto XIV in Italy's Serie A2.

"Is everyone here? Dust off the number 5 (his Argentina jersey number), I'm in," says Manu Ginobili, the emblem of Argentine basketball and four-time NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs, at the end of the video.

The event will take place at the Parque Roca stadium in the south of Buenos Aires, where there is a complex built to International Olympic Committee standards for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The venue has already hosted basketball qualifiers and Davis Cup tennis matches.

This year marks two decades since the gold medal in Athens in 2004, the most glorious sporting day for the South American country, when Argentina won its first-ever gold medals in football and basketball on the same day, with Tevez and Ginobili as the main stars.

In the same competition, the Golden Generation stole the limelight from the American Dream Team in the semi-finals, defeating the all-NBA team 89-81 to become the only country in history to deny the United States Olympic gold since they began competing with NBA players (Barcelona 92).

The Golden Generation was a group of Argentine basketball players who, between 2001 and 2016, not only won gold in 2004, but also a bronze medal in Beijing 2008, a runner-up finish at the 2002 World Championships in the United States and a host of continental titles. It is all the more remarkable when you consider that, prior to this group's arrival, Argentina had failed to qualify for Sydney 2000 and barely got out of the first round at international tournaments, despite being world champions in 1950 with another great generation of basketball players.

At Athens 2004, Argentina's legendary "Golden Generation" shone after finishing third in the group stage, with memorable wins such as against Serbia and Montenegro (with Manu Ginobili's historic last-second shot). They also beat China and New Zealand. Despite losses to Spain and Italy, the team reached the quarter-finals, where they were at their best.

In the knockout stage, they came up against a tough Greece team and won 68-64 in a tense game played in Greece's own backyard. Then came the biggest upset of the tournament: Argentina defeated the United States 89-81 in the semi-finals, beating NBA stars such as LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, Amar'e Stoudemire and Allen Iverson.

In the final, Argentina avenged their earlier defeat to Italy with a convincing 84-69 victory to become Olympic champions for the first time in their history, making 28 August 2004 an iconic date in Argentine sporting history.

As well as the gold medal in Athens, the Golden Generation left an indelible mark on world basketball by finishing runners-up at the 2002 FIBA World Championship in the USA, where they defeated the Dream Team on home soil in the second round.

The event, details of which have yet to be announced, will be attended not only by Ginobili - the historic shooting guard of the San Antonio Spurs - but also by FIBA legend Luis Scola, who is Argentina's all-time leading scorer and has played more than 170 games for the national team.

These players have had long and distinguished careers in the NBA alongside other South American basketball stars such as Nocioni, Oberto, Herrmann, Delfino, Wolkowyski and Sanchez.

The "Brothers in Arms", as they are known in Argentina, will not only return to the court 20 years later, but will also embark on a school trip to Mendoza, a province 800 km from the Argentine capital.

It won't be the first time that the majority of the Golden Generation have come together. In September 2022, they gathered in New York for Manu Ginobili's induction into the NBA Hall of Fame, although not all were present and no game was played. Those present in the Big Apple included Manu Ginobili, Pepe Sánchez, Puma Montecchia, Chapu Nocioni, Pablo Prigioni, Fabricio Oberto and Gaby Fernández.

For this reunion, which they have quietly organised with the help of a production company, there will be guests and everything needed for an emotional evening. The official launch will take place on 28 August, when ticket prices and details will be announced for what promises to be a special night for the sport that is Argentina's second most popular, albeit far behind football. Unfortunately, recent results

The reunion, which has been quietly organised by a production company, will have guests and everything needed for an emotional evening. The official launch will take place on 28 August, when ticket prices and details will be announced for what promises to be a special night for the sport that is Argentina's second most popular, albeit far behind football. Unfortunately, recent results have not been favourable, with the team failing to qualify for either the 2023 World Cup or the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
