Six nations claim titles at World Rowing U23 Championships in St Catharines. WORLD ROWING

The first eight sets of medals have been awarded in the U23 boat classes on day five of the combined Senior, U23 and U19 World Rowing Championships in St Catharines, Canada. The competition will conclude on Sunday 25 August.

The morning session saw the last of the U19 heats, with a series of repeats in the afternoon. The U19 medal finals will all take place on the final day of competition. Following the conclusion of the U19 racing for the day, a full house in the Craig Swayze Memorial Grandstand was treated to eight finals in the U23 boat classes, with six nations winning U23 World Championship titles and two World Championship best times being broken. 

New Zealand was the first to claim a gold medal with Orla Fitzgerald, Charlotte Darry, Jane Schellekens and Isobel Eliadis-Watson, beating the USA to the line in the women's coxed four, but there was redemption for the USA in the men's U23 coxed four as they prevented Italy from defending their title with Leo Bessler, Braden Porterfield, Miles Hudgins and Josh Diggons. 

Chile's Manuel Fernandez Antri and Felipe Guerra won a fantastic gold medal in the men's lightweight pair, while Germany beat hosts Canada in both the women's (Charlotte Eyltjes, Rebekka Falkenberg, Claire Light and Helena Brenke) and men's (Paul Maisenhaelter, Philip Kaltenborn, Simon Haible and Maximilian Ruehling) lightweight quadruple sculls with

Great Britain won the U23 women's pairs final as Anna Grace and Holly Youd got out fast at 45 bpm and held the lead throughout. Spain took silver with Naroa Zubimendi and Emma Alimbau and France, who were fifth with less than 500m to go, took bronze with Léa Herscovici and Fleur Vaucoret. 

It was a second gold medal for New Zealand on Thursday as Joshua Vodanovich and Oliver Welch held off the challenge of Germany's Tobias Stangemann and Johannes Benien over the 2,000m course. The Oceaninc pair set a new World Championship best time of 0.29 seconds as they crossed the line 0.92 seconds ahead of Germany in a thrilling final. Italy arrived in third position with Alessandro Timpanaro and Edoardo Caramaschi.

Despite a fast start from Poland in the U23 women's quadruple sculls, defending champions Romania (Mariana-Laura Dumitru, Manuela-Gabriela Lungu, Emanuela-Ioana Ciotău and Patricia Cireș) drew level at the 1000m mark and then pulled away to retain gold with a new World Championship best time, beating the previous one by 2.33 seconds. Poland finished second and Great Britain held off a challenge from Germany to take bronze.
