Today, 25 August marks 25 days until September’s International Day of University Sport (IDUS) and the European Week of Sport (EWOS) which will continue their annual tradition of promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

The International Day of University Sport will take place on Friday 20 September marking the annual traditions ninth year. Officially proclaimed by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO), the celebration was set up in 2016 to help create links between universities and their local communities to encourage and facilitate sport, physical activity and healthy living.

Every year the day of celebration presents an opportunity to share knowledge on key issues relating to the development of sport and the University Sports Movement worldwide while also improving awareness of the importance of sport in educational institutions.

Just as in previous years, IDUS 2024 will see an array of activities organised across the globe on all five continents.

After the IDUS 2024 celebrations on 20 September, the 10th edition of the European Week of Sport (EWOS) will take place between 23 and 30 September across Europe and beyond.

Set up in 2015 to respond to the growing crisis of inactivity, the European Week of Sport aims to encourage Europeans to embrace a healthy and active lifestyle regardless of their background, age or fitness level.

Growing year on year, last year saw over 11 million participants from 40 participating countries unite across over 37,000 European venues.

Next month marks one decade of the EWOS and will fittingly aligns with the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to reinforce common values of sustainability, education and equality.

According to the EWOS page, "this year's priorities are: inclusion - sport is for everybody; well-being - a step towards happiness; and belonging - we are a community."

The opening ceremony of the European Week of Sport 2024 will take place in Budapest, Hungary on 23 September 2024.
