"I like to compete, nothing will stop me." Words of the Canadian talent, who, after surviving a tragic accident that led to a personal rebirth, is now preparing for the Paralympics. Determined to transform pain into courage, 'JW', outranked in multiple sports, ultimately found his path in rowing.

Beyond the shadow of a doubt, Wassermann has travelled a path filled with immense adversity to reach the Paralympic stage. His life took a drastic turn on April 6, 2018, when the bus carrying his junior hockey team, the Humboldt Broncos, suffered a horrific accident on an icy road in Saskatchewan. Of the 29 passengers, 16 lost their lives, and Jacob was one of the 13 survivors, though the cost was high: a memory he will never discard and paralysis from the waist down.

Before the accident, Jacob was the talented goalkeeper of the team, young, full of dreams of glory on the ice, and hopeful of making it to an NHL team. Hockey wasn’t just his passion; it was his life, a life that changed forever in the blink of an eye. "I faced a reality I never imagined," Jacob recalls.

After the accident, Wassermann had to adapt to a new reality, where the ice, his natural habitat, his playing field, was left behind. However, his thirst for competition and his desire to push his limits never faded. In October 2022, during an event at the Saskatoon Rowing Club, Jacob, devoted to science, switched his focus from ice to water, symbolically fusing the two elements. This is how he tried adaptive rowing for the first time. What began as an experiment quickly became a new purpose and the foundation for his next big adventure.

In less than a year, Jacob went from being a novice rower to an elite competitor. In 2023, his name echoed in the adaptive sports community after winning a gold medal at the Canadian Para Rowing Championships. But his rise didn’t stop there; at the Paralympic Qualification Regatta of the Americas in Rio de Janeiro, Jacob secured a silver medal, earning his place in the Paris Paralympics.

The prospect's journey hasn’t been a solitary one. His wife, Madison, has been by his side every step of the way, not only as his life partner but also as his sports assistant. "Madison has been my rock. Without her support, I wouldn’t be where I am today," Wassermann admits gratefully. Moreover, his family, including his parents and brother, will accompany him to Paris, supporting him as he chases the dream of winning a Paralympic medal.

The young rower has spent the past few months in rigorous training on Wascana Lake in Regina, Saskatchewan. Six days a week, twice a day, Jacob has rowed tirelessly, preparing for the challenge that awaits him in the French capital. "I like competing. I like how hard the training is. It’s also exciting to be on the water and doing things I couldn’t do before I got injured," he says enthusiastically.

But beyond his competitive spirit, Jacob knows he’s not just competing for himself. "I’m competing for everyone who has supported me, for my Broncos team, and for those who are no longer with us," he explains with emotion. The tragedy that once marked him now drives him, turning him into a symbol of resilience—not only for his team and country but for all those facing seemingly insurmountable challenges—.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will mark Jacob Wassermann’s debut on the international rowing stage. Competing in the men’s PR1 single sculls category, Jacob will tackle the 2,000-metre race with the determination and courage that have defined his life since that fateful day in 2018.

His story isn’t just about an athlete who overcame adversity; it’s about a young man who refused to give up, who turned pain into strength, and who, despite everything, continues to dream of achieving glory. "All my life, I’ve wanted to be a professional athlete and compete against the best in the world. I’m really excited to have this opportunity to represent Canada. I think it’ll be a great opportunity to learn and develop even further," Jacob concludes, making it clear that his journey has only just begun.
