The USA’s men’s and women’s flag football teams both won gold at the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Lahti, Finland. Held at the Lahti Sport Centre, the event showcased top athletes with Austria and Mexico taking silver in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

In the women’s final, the USA demonstrated their dominance with a commanding 31-18 victory over Mexico, the World Games champions. The American team, known for their creativity and strategic prowess, secured their third consecutive world title, showcasing a performance that left spectators in awe.

Vanita Krouch, the USA women's quarterback, praised her team’s collective effort, stating, “It’s we, not me, and I couldn’t do this without my girls, our coaches, and this team. To be here and get a three-peat feels amazing.”

Krouch also expressed her excitement about the future, particularly the possibility of flag football’s inclusion in the Olympics. “This job is done, but the job for the future is not done. We are still preparing for tomorrow, but we are going to enjoy today and celebrate. It’s a dream come true to possibly play in the Olympics and keep fighting for the roster spot and keep representing the red, white, and blue.”

On the other hand, Diana Flores, quarterback for the Mexican team, remained optimistic despite the loss. “I think flag football is a game of perfection. We know what we have to work on and at the end of the day, this meant a silver medal for us. But the goal never changes, we still dream of gold, and we are going to keep training for gold. This is just one step more toward the ultimate objective,” she said. Flores also shared her aspirations for the future, emphasizing the significance of flag football’s potential Olympic debut.

“The Olympics is the dream. It is the one thing I think about every day. I wake up, I train for it, I dream about it and it’s a goal. I want to be there to represent my country and have the opportunity to go with my team and can you imagine bringing home an Olympic medal? I know it’s going to be a great opportunity for flag football and the global flag community.”

The men’s final saw the USA continue their dominance with a decisive 53-21 victory over Austria. The Americans built an early lead, finishing the first half with a commanding 41-13 score. Darrell “Housh” Doucette, quarterback for the USA men’s team, praised his team’s performance, saying, “To me, this is one of the greatest teams USA has ever had. Defensively we were stout, and we got stops when we needed to set the tone early on. That shows that this team is special.”

The win marked the USA men’s fifth consecutive world title, underscoring their sustained excellence in the sport.

The tournament also featured thrilling bronze medal matches. In the men’s division, Switzerland, ranked 14th, made a remarkable upset by defeating the 2021 silver medallists, Mexico, 41-35, marking their first-ever World Championships medal. In the women’s division, Japan exhibited incredible resilience by overturning a halftime deficit to beat Austria 41-40 in a dramatic final play.

IFAF President Pierre Trochet commended the event, saying, “Tonight concludes this record-breaking tournament and I want to thank the organizers, the volunteers, the fans, and, most importantly, the incredible athletes for once again inspiring fans everywhere with world-class performances on this global stage.”

He added, “This was the most competitive Championship ever with new standards being set on and off the field.” Trochet also highlighted the sport’s growing global reach and looked forward to the next IFAF Flag Football World Championships in 2026 and the potential inclusion of flag football in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
