France's Flora Vautier, who recently won a bronze medal in the mixed category, expressed her gratitude and admitted that the support of the crowd will be crucial if she is to repeat her quarter-final success against world number two Sandra Mikolaschek in the WS4 women's table tennis.

Flora Vautier scored a remarkable 3-0 (13-11/11-7/11-9) victory over Serbian veteran Nada Matic in a match in which she enjoyed strong support from the local crowd at the South Arena in Paris on Sunday.

The 19-year-old won her match convincingly to set up a quarter-final clash with Germany's Mikolaschek, the world's second-ranked player, at the same venue on Tuesday in the WS4 women's table tennis quarter-finals at the Paralympics.

After her first win, Vautier said the atmosphere in the stadium "helped a lot" in overcoming her Serbian opponent. "I like to serve when there's a lot of noise, when the opponent is a bit unsettled," Vautier said.

"I knew she (Matic) was better on paper, so I thought if I didn't put the ball in play, it would be tough. I lose when it's 10-10 or during breaks or things like that, also because of lack of experience. So the (local support) was great," she added.

The passion of the local crowd can be seen at almost every match, as it was with young Félix Lebrun during the Olympic Games, a special moment of the thirty-third Olympic Games in Paris. This support for their athletes has been a constant and will be repeated at the Paralympics.

Although there were five other singles matches going on at the same time, almost all eyes were on Vautier's table and every point the Frenchwoman won was greeted with enthusiastic applause.

At crucial moments in the second and third sets, the stands around the tables shook with the sound of stomping feet and chants of "Flora, Flora, Flora". Earlier in the day, Vautier received her bronze medal in the mixed doubles XD7, with thousands of fans cheering for her and her partner Florian Merrien. "It was incredible, especially for a bronze," said Vautier.

"After that, I'm not really trying to forget it (the medal), but rather keep it in the back of my mind so that I can really concentrate. If I can beat (Mikolaschek) and win another medal (in singles), that would be amazing."

But the Paralympic debutant will face a stern test against the 27-year-old German, who has been given a straight bye into the quarter-finals. "I've never won against her. I'm still not the favourite. But I'll definitely give it my all," said Vautier. "It's the crowd that's going to scare her. It's not really me," she added.

All Para-Athletes in Para-Table Tennis who reach the semi-finals will secure a medal (bronze), meaning the Frenchwoman is just one step away from securing two medals at the event on home soil.
