Day five of the Paris Paralympic Games was yet another successful one for Team GB who won six gold medals following their Super Sunday of a dozen golds. Team USA shone in para-triathlon with eight medals — the most in the country’s history in the Games.

USA takes the para-triathlon by storm

Team USA dominated the Paralympic triathlons with an astounding eight medals — including world champion Hailey Danz's first gold in the women's PTS2 after her silver finishes in Rio and Tokyo. Compatriots Grace Norman and Chris Hammer topped the women's and men's PTS5. Spain’s Susana Rodriguez overcame a pre-Games bike crash to defend her women's PTVI title.

"You just never get tired of winning," Rodriguez told Olympics.com. "This medal is really special. I’m very proud of (guide) Sara (Pelez Sala) because exactly three months ago we had a very big bike crash riding (at) 70 kilometres an hour. We were lucky we didn't have bad consequences for our bodies, but mentally it's been hard to ride the tandem (bike) again."

World record wins at the Stade de France

Ethiopia's Yayesh Gate Tesfaw grabbed gold at the women's 1500m T11 event, beating her own records in the process. She clocked in at 4:27.68 to take more than four seconds off the previous mark she set at the 2024 World Championships last May. She also shaved nearly 10 full seconds off the Paralympic record, which Tesfaw set at the Tokyo Games.

"It means even more to do it here in the Paralympic arena and at the Paralympic Games of Paris 2024,” Tesfaw said. “My country has a lot of heroic runners, so I am happy that I am now one of them and can do my country proud.”

Claudiney Batista dos Santos of Brazil and Bobirjon Omonov of Uzbekistan both improved on their own Paralympic records. Batista dos Santos won gold in the men's discus F56 for the second consecutive Paralympics with a massive toss of 46.86 meters. Omonov won his second consecutive gold in men's shot put F41 with a new record throw of 14.32m.

Record-setting swim times for USA and Italy

USA’s Morgan Stickney blazed through the Paris Paralympic pool with a time of 4:53.88 to smash the Paralympic record and win gold in the women's 400m freestyle S7. Italian Simone Barlaam broke his own world record, winning the men's 50m freestyle S9 in 23.90 seconds and securing his fifth Paralympic medal at age 24.

"It's just so surreal to be here and to be a gold medallist once again. I love this event - it's my favourite event. I love training for it. I'm just so excited,” Stickney, who is battling a rare vascular condition, said.
