Alvaro del Amo secured another bronze, his second at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, in the F11 discus throw, and he is now planning to display both medals at his ONCE kiosk in Chamartin, in the Spanish capital, Madrid.

Known as the "bronze man," del Amo earned his second Paralympic bronze, his third-place throw of 39.60 metres marking a personal best. He finished behind Italy's Oney Tapia (41.92) and Iran's Hassan Bajoulvand (41.75).

Earlier, he also achieved a personal best of 13.38 metres in the shot put, earning another bronze. “I’m happy, feeling like the work was well done. Now that everything is over, it’s time to relax and enjoy a bit,” he said in the mixed zone.

This result surpasses his Tokyo 2020 performance, where he placed seventh in the shot put. Recently, del Amo won bronzes in both the discus and shot put at the Paris World Championships, a city that has defined his career. These medals add to a bronze from the 2021 European Championships in Poland and a seventh-place finish at the 2019 World Championships in Dubai.

Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentaria at age seven, del Amo became almost completely blind by 18, only able to see light and shadows. In school, his strength stood out in football throw-ins, a talent that later translated to athletics. He drew inspiration from Alfonso Fidalgo, a five-time gold medalist and one-time silver medalist over three Paralympic Games.

Alongside his athletic career, del Amo sells ONCE lottery tickets in Chamartin, where he plans to display his medals for his customers. "Success always feels better when shared." Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was in Paris on Thursday to support the country’s Paralympic athletes.

“I’m here to support our Paralympic athletes, Spanish Paralympic sport, and above all, to highlight their example of life and perseverance, as well as their impressive achievements. I’m very proud. The investment and commitment to Paralympic sport is paying off,” he told TVE.

Sanchez watched the T12 100-metre semifinals, featuring Melani Berges and Nagore Folgado, as well as the discus final, where del Amo won bronze. Later, he visited the Paralympic Village, greeted by swimmer Teresa Perales, Spain's most decorated athlete with 28 medals, and Silvia Mansilla, head of the Spanish delegation.
