US soccer legend Alex Morgan, who helped lead the United States to two Women's World Cup championships, announced on Thursday that she will retire following her final club match this Sunday.

The 35-year-old forward, who also guided the US to gold at the 2012 London Olympics, shared the news that she is expecting her second child. Morgan made the announcement on social media, confirming that her last match will be on Sunday when her San Diego Wave team faces North Carolina Courage in a National Women's Soccer League game.

Morgan has been one of the most recognisable faces in women's soccer globally. She played a pivotal role in the USA’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019 and made significant strides off the pitch, advocating for equality between men’s and women’s sports.

During her 14-year international career, Morgan netted 123 goals, placing her fifth on the all-time scoring list for the US women's national team, alongside 53 assists. Reflecting on her journey, Morgan said, "I grew up on this team. It was so much more than soccer."

"It was the friendships and the unwavering respect and support among each other, the relentless push for global investment in women's sports, and the pivotal moments of success both on and off the field. "I am so incredibly honored to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years. My desire for success may have always driven me, but what I got in return was more than I could have ever asked and hoped for."

Morgan scored her first international goal in 2010 against China and went on to score against 32 different nations, with her highest tally being 12 goals against Japan. Her last appearance for the US national team was on June 4 in a match against South Korea, and her final goal for the team came in February during the Women's Gold Cup against Argentina.

Throughout her career, Morgan appeared in 22 Women's World Cup games, scoring nine goals, and added six goals in 16 Olympic matches. After giving birth to her first child, daughter Charlie, in 2020, Morgan became the 14th mother to represent the US national team.

On the club level, her accomplishments include a league title with Portland in 2013, a stint with Lyon in 2017, where she helped win the French league, French Cup, and UEFA Champions League, and a period with Tottenham in 2020.
