Paralympian Brenda Osnaya Alvarez made headlines at the Paris 2024 Games with a touching proposal. After finishing the women’s PTWC triathlon on 2 September, Osnaya proposed on the Pont Alexandre III to her partner and coach, Jessica González, with a sign which translates to "Will you marry me?".

The proposal, held at the finish line of the triathlon, was a poignant moment that captured the hearts of many. It celebrated not only Alvarez’s sporting achievement, but also marked a significant personal milestone for the couple, who recently celebrated their third anniversary. Taking to Instagram, González expressed her pride and joy in a heartfelt message, “I am so proud to be both a coach and a future wife. Our connection is deep, and our journey together has been filled with challenges and victories. This moment was a perfect reflection of our love and commitment.”

Alvarez’s journey to this unforgettable proposal is a testament to her incredible resilience and determination. After a devastating car accident in 2010 left her with a broken spine and paralysis in her lower limbs, it seemed that her athletic dreams had ended. Yet, during her rehabilitation, she discovered a passion for swimming, leading her to the world of para-triathlon.

Her transition into para-sports has been marked by impressive achievements. Making her Paralympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, she finished fifth in the PTWC category, a notable result given the competitive nature of the triathlon. At the Paris 2024 Games, despite being disqualified due to accumulated penalties, her proposal to González remained a highlight of the event. This gesture was part of a broader trend at the Paralympics, where athletes use the global stage to celebrate personal milestones in touching ways.

Their story has inspired many around the world, demonstrating that true success is measured not just by medals and achievements but by the love and support shared with those closest to you. González shared, “Our relationship has been a source of strength and motivation. This proposal was a way to celebrate not just our love but also the journey that brought us here.”

Alvarez’s career in paratriathlon is a testament to her unwavering dedication. From her early days in roller skating to her notable achievements in para-triathlon, she has made significant strides, including a bronze medal at the 2022 Americas Triathlon Cup, gold in the 100m T34 at the 2022 Grand Prix, silver at the 2024 Devonport World Series, and gold at the 2023 Para-triathlon World Cup. These milestones reflect her commitment to excellence and her ability to overcome challenges.
